My '99 DII seems to be loosing a slight amount of coolant again. I say again because just about a year ago I changed the head gaskets. It has had no leaks since, but at Christmas, I took the vehicle from Oregon th San Diego and back, putting about 3000 miles on the vehicle within a week. Would the vehicle loose coolant with this much intense driving? It lost maybe 1/2 cup or more. Also, the timing cover gasket looks like it is oozing, and I was wondering if coolant can be lost through this gasket failing. I really dont want to do another head gasket job. Any ideas on the missing coolant? Could it be the timing cover gasket? Thanks for your help!

Also, I should mention that it has been very cold up here lately, below freezing, and I dont know if that would do enough to show a low fluid level in the coolant reservoir. Thanks.

Has the radiator or the valley gasket ever been replaced? These are the two most common coolant leaking problems on 99s.

I replaced the valley gasket when I did the heads. I should check them out but I'm not sure if you can tell anything without taking the manifold off which would mess up the gasket- I applied some type of gasket glue or whatever to both sides of the gasket when I put the new one in. I could live with this car if it was the valley and not the head gaskets again.

Maybe I could just have people chime in on all the possible ways to loose coolant, and then I can check all of them out.

Has your radiator ever been replaced? There is a known defect on early D2 radiators having a flawed flange at the bottom. Check underneath in that area, see if you see any dripping.

Is coolant showing in your oil?
Is coolant in the exhaust?
Is there coolant on the ground where your car sits?

The timing cover has passages to supply coolant to the pump. It is not uncommon to have an ooze at the timing cover, usually at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions, if you were to imagine the tc as the face of a clock. You said it was very cold; is it possible that the the contraction and expansion of fluids/metals/rubber have affected the level? What I mean is: Are there any puddles when it sits?
Radiator slow leaks on the DII tend to be on the driver's side.
Have you checked the tightness of the intake bolts? I know it's not easy to get to, but...

Check the color of the oil. About a month ago my car started overheating and it turned out that the gasket behind the timing cover was the problem. I had about 4 gallons of coolant in my oil. Is your car overheating as well?

Are you sure that the cooling system was not too full and it just 'purged' the extra coolant when it expanded? Is it still loosing coolant or was the 1/2 cup all it lost?

I am having the same problem...happens in the heat and cold. Going to have the shop check it out. It is not dripping out onto the garage floor so it may be getting mixed in with the engine fluids somehow.
