Is there anyway to safely remove the lining on the back door of a DII without breaking the red grommets that hold it on? I'm routing a coax cable to the spare tire carrier for a CB and I've broken two in the process. Is there an easier way to try to remove the lining. Any suggestions?

I could break them all, buy new ones, replace them and go. Just an idea. Anyone who has done this have any ideas?

Davis, I flipped the tire carrier and ran into the same problem. I just tried to be as gentle as possible and then re-use as many as possible and put in back tobether that way.

The grommets just don't want to come out, considering they are made to not come out. I was wondering if they were just general grommets and could buy some at any AutoZone and just replace those that I do break. Jim, how did you get them out, a screwdriver with masking tape?

When I inverted my tire carrier to fit some 265's, I used two old butter knives that I wrapped in electrical tape (so I wouldn't cut the trim). It worked pretty well, I only broke 3-4 of the grommets. For replacement grommets I looked at Ace and some local parts stores, but couldn't find them. So, I ordered a few new packs of them from Nathan at Discount Rovers.

I hear there are interior door trim tools that you can get from Napa that might work as well.

Ever since I put on the larger tire/took out the trim I've had a pretty annoying creak from the back door. I even aired down my spare to ~10psi (have an air pump) to try to lessen the weight.

You'll break a few, but hopefully not too many. Do it in a warm place if you can - they will be less brittle.

I use regular home depot silicone to stick things like this back on, it holds well and can be pulled off again if necessary.

So far I've broken about 6-7. I gave it a rest and searched the local AutoZones and Advanced Auto Parts but none of them carried any of the same grommets. I bought some similar grommets and tried to trim them to fit but I didn't have any luck. I'm going to make a run tommorow to the local Land Rover dealership and see if they have any. Isn't Nathan's new website www.discountbritishparts.com? Dean, are you saying you would you use the silicon instead of the grommets? Ya, it's pretty chilly here and I realized thats why the darned things kept breaking after the first few were a pain to get out.

Davis, the silicone I use to stick back things like the plastic sill cover (I can stand on mine without them coming off). Basically put a line of it over the mating surfaces and press them together for a minute. Leave a gap in the windows for a few days. You'll be able to peal them off if you have to (which you probably won't).

I purchased a cheap (under $5) interior trim tool kit from Harbor Freight a while back that has a few tools to make jobs like this easier.

Its paid for itself a few times over.

Hey thanks guys,
I really appreciate everyone's help. A new Harbor Freight is next to the local Land Rover dealership so I'm just going to have to make a run by both tomorrow.

Take Care,
Davis

Sorry to hear about your broken clips :-(

I used the method mentioned in this tech thread without any problems: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/cbantenna/indexmain.htm

Good Luck, Jamie

Find a place that either supplies the auto body shops or the home mechanic. You should be able to pick them up for pennies. For anyone in Calgary check out Dean's Auto-Body in the NE.

Get the trim tool. You won't be disappointed.

Jamie,
Thats the tech thread I'm using, but the screw driver idea didn't work for me. Dave, thanks for mentioning the trim tool set. It worked like a charm. I went ahead, while I was out by the dealership, and purchased 20 new grommets. They are originally about $2.20 apiece but the guy marked them down to $1.15. They said I could return those that I don't use for a refund.
Thanks Again,
Davis

When inverting the tire carrier do I need to drill two new holes or is there any way around this?

I skipped over the tech section of how to invert the spare tire carrier while browsing expeditionexchange.com. I found out how!
