In my search for tires, I found two places that would not sell "S" rated tires for my 99D1. I enjoy driving fast; however, my Disco has NEVER seen steady running over 112 MPH. Actually it has never seen steady running for any great duration over 90 MPH.

So the Tirerack and a local tire shop has lost all my business for my Disco. Neither one asked or even knew what the load rating was on the tires I asked for and no one seemed to care. So as a D1 owner I cannot by BFG A/T's M/T's, or Dunlop Radial Rover's, etc.

I feel that I am an educated consumer. I know what is safe for use on my vehicle. I felt that an "S" rated tire with a 1984lbs load rating was safe for my truck. In the future, I will just bring rims in and tell them it's for a homebuilt project.

Brian, I hear ya. I wanted some long lasting nice riding tires for my Disco, but I also wanted them to be tough enough to handle some off pavement driving. I wanted to get a 255/70 16. I went to my local Michelin dealer and they would not put on the tire I wanted--LTX M/S. Said they were all wrong for the car and that I had to get an H rated tire. I said forget it and left. I went to Sears Auto Center and picked up the same tires (called XC LT4 in their lingo) and they gave me no trouble. They are perfect. Additionally, I had a nail in one while on vacation and stopped by the local store there and got all fixed up for free. The obvious advantage of buying from a chain.

i stoped at a local fireston to look at tires and they wouldn't install 245/75/16s because it wasn't listed as a factory tire size on a discoI, but they had no problen sticking 31" tires on the back of some redneck kids 2wd 1/2 ton truck while i was there

This is actually a huge upcomming issue for tire stores. At a goodyear seminar back in October we were warned of a court case going on in cali, where some grandpa had a newer mustang, but just wanted cheap tires on it so he could go to the grocery store. The salesman didn't feel the old man would need the high speed rated tires so he did as the customer asked. The old man's grandson came into town, borrowed the car, was racing around, and rolled it going off an offramp and was killed. The Kids parents sued for millions and won. The tire salesman just thought he was helping out an old man, but brought the store down because of it.

I know when I was both at Good Year, and at Big O, we weren't allowed to sell anything under the vehicles recommended speed rateing, although; tire size was not yet an issue. This will be a growing trend in the futer as shop owners try to protect themselves, and large chain stores with universal policies take over the market. It kinda sucks, but it's what happens when there's so many sue happy people out there. But there are plenty of shops that will also do anything for your buisness, for the time being anyway, so just look around.

i have bfg at's and they sold them & installed them for me no questions asked...the tire stores you visited must be pretty gangsta, laugh it up but old wallyworld gave me an excellent deal and free rotation/balences for life of the tires. plus if they blowout i get a new tire free, and with BFG if i get stuck, they will pay for my first towing.

I have a 98 D1 with BFG ATs and no one questioned me when I bought them. You won't find any AT or MT tires with similar factory ratings but as you'll find out, I'm guessing about 90% of the trucks on this website are running AT and/or MT tires that are all below factory specs so it's probably just a matter of finding the right place. You should probably be more concerned with load rating than speed rating.

You just need to shop around a bit more but realistically, these trucks aren't meant to be driven at 90+ mph. They're big off-road bricks. Driving them that fast, you're just asking for trouble.

I had same issue with Costco they would not install BFG AT ko 235/70/16 on my 94 Disco for the truck require a 105 H specs rating and the BFG has 104. Bought the four tires and went to my local Land Rover tech for installation.

I just ordered 235/85/16 from tirerack a few weeks ago. I noticed the tires had not shipped according to the tracking site. I called them and they said that the tires are not the right size. I told them the truck was lifted and they shipped it right after the phone call. I ordered the tires on-line so the web site only ask for make, model, and year. It would be nice if they had a "notes" section as well. As for mounting and balance, I carried the rims and tires in for mounting/balance, and installed them myself at home because I don't like the way most places impact the lugs on ect...

When finding a decent tire store I call around first. I got my street tires (245/75R16 BFG AT) from Big O. They gave a replacement warranty including fixes, balance and rotate for a few bucks. It has been worth it for me with the crap on the road around here. Plus I take it in for balancing a couple times a year if something goes wrong. They get rotated plenty by me.

For offroad tires, I go to an offroad shop. Quality mounting, balancing and they will test fit to make sure that they will work-- offroad.

Many times a shop will match a price, maybe except for a web price.

funny thing is that SEARS in ATL won't install anything on my '96 disco... or on my old '95 disco...
i wanted 245/70 BFT AT's which are load D, keep in mind stock rating is C... and they continually ask me if it will work @ the local Tire Force... but not enough to care, just more of a constant question than a problem with me buying them... had them on two trucks and love them!

Jess - Sears at Town Center in Kennesaw installed 245/75R16's on my 00 DII with not much isuse. Dunlop Radial Rovers. Nice ride on the 75S parking lot. They did ask "uh, you gonna have any problems with that size?" So I said no, and they put them on. however, they are inconsistent. The guys that actually know what they are doing there will install them, the guys that don't have a clue will only go by the book, so at Sears it's luck of the draw. Probably safer that way anyway. However, the tire tech, who really seemed to know his sh*t did come over to me to discuss tire pressure. We finally decided on 32lbs front and back to start with. If anyone has suggestions to the contrary - would love to hear them. The 32 seems to ride fine.
