Has anybody had any issues with the clearance of the grease zirk on the front drive shaft from Great Basin Rover with the cat converter. I just had mine installed last week in hopes that it would solve some of my driveline vibration issues that have developed since my OME HD 3"lift (which are still present by the way)and since I've got 70,000 miles on the stock shaft and with all the discussion of having one crater on you, I thought it was a good time. Anyway, I crawled under there the next day to observe the install and noticed that the grease zirk on the collar of the shaft had been making slight contact with the cat. Enough so that it bent the zirk and pulled it out a little bit stripping the threads. Now I'm loosing all my grease and am at a loss as to what process I should take from here. Anybody got any ideas?

Kelly-

I believe that is a common problem. I noticed the same issue with my GBR front shaft on my RRC while I was installing it. I immediately uscrewed the Zerk fitting and installed a flush fitting.

The only disadvantage to a flush fitting is it requires a needle adapter for your grease gun.

With the damage you have, you may have to install an oversize flush fitting or careful use of JB weld may also work.

Good luck-

It's very common. Everyone I know that has the GBR front driveshaft has had this problem. I emailed GBR about it and Bill told me that it is a very rare problem. That only a very small % of DS have had this problem. Having said that, the only thing he recommended was to send him back the DS and he would seal that zerk location and redrill it somewhere else. Of course I didn't bother to do that. Who would waste their time and postage doing that. Just take it to a local driveshaft shop and they should do it for less than it would cost you to send it back to GBR plus you wouldn't be out of your car. Good luck,
Ed

Kelly,

Did you replace the rear as well? The roto back there likes to contribute to the vibration levels once you go 3". I didn't know the GBR made a front shaft for the D2. Bill did send me the flush mount fitting for the front......

I could not find a flush zerk. I just banged on the cat until I had clearance (they are a couple layers as long as you do not bash the ceramic you're OK).

I don't know how you drove it that way even that zerk bending would have taken a second or two and made one hell of a noise.

Always test your installation before driving. The shafts are pretty easily rotated while you are under there. Furtunately I did this.

Paul - I replaced the rear at the same time I did the front. The rear is in good shape at this point - no issues like the zirk on the front. I do know that I have a spider gear in the front diff that has some wear and I plan to upgrade to True Trak with 4.11's up there and at the same time do a detroit in the rear with the 4.11 set up back there too. Could this worn spider gear cause this kind of vibration?

If you have not found a really good drive shaft shop that does benchwork. Do so.

Take the shafts there and have them balanced. Mine were not all that well balanced straight from GBR. A *good* balance made a world of difference on mine.

Yes, I know of three indidviduals on this board that are having the same issues with the stock spiders and they noticed it by vibration. Right now the Pig is vibe free and I am sooooooo happy. However, I know it will not last I am saving up for new diffs and stuff :-)

can you install a 90 degree zirk? With the clearanced cat it should clear. if the threads are junked, you can get some that you hammer in.

90 s won't fit, put a flush mount in it and call it good.
it's just a drag that you didn't check the clearance before you drove. mine hit too, but i swapped out the fitting and seemed to save myself the head ache your dealing with.
call Bill, he'll work with you.
