My 96 hadn't been getting up to normal operating temperature, so I replaced the thermostat today. It is now running at normal temperature, but the oil pressure light is coming on when I'm idling. When I accelerate the light goes off. The oil level is fine and it seems to be running alright. There was a group of wires that I moved around quite a bit getting to the thermostat, so we traced it to what we thought was the oil pressure sensor, and cleaned it, but the light is still coming on. Any ideas? Thanks

Just a shot in the dark, but I just had similar issues. The oil pickup tube down in the oil pan was clogged up, and the oil pressure light would come on at idle or low rpms, but go away at driving speeds. Anyhow, I dropped the oil pan and cleaned everything, reassembled and now no problems. Worth a shot. It's a pretty easy job other than dropping the front sway bar.

the light seems to only come on when the engine is fully warmed up if that helps any.

Warm oil is thinner and will cause less pressure in the system, so any pressure problem won't necessarily show up until the engine is warm. Do what Robert suggested or have someone do it. Also check to see that the pickup tube is tight againt the block.

could be a worn oil pump ... doesn't pump enough at idle to maintain pressure. When you accelerate, you increase the pressure by increasing rpms. I would check oil pick up first as that is a common fault.

You could also have worn main/rod bearings that are bleeding off the pressure. Did you change the oil regularly and used high quality oil?... if not you may have that dreaded sludge buildup in the motor.
