I don't know how old this BB is, but over the past year(s) I see posts stating to the effect "LRs are becoming crap b/c they're owned by Ford etc." So I wonder if in the distant past if similar type statements were made when LR was owned by BMW? Eg."LRs are becoming soft 'beamers'! etc." If this is true then only LRs made pre 1994 are the only good off-road vehicles to be had and pre 1994 vehicles were built by a govt. owned or bankrupt corporation. Too sophistic and simplistic???

good point. i have to admit thers nothing like a good series land rover. almost bought a very nice '56 series 1 and shipped it back this summer. You can't kill them then again i love the Discovery's. However troublesome they may be. Jack |

I'm not sure its a case of who owned whom - I think its more a case of the product getting more complex over the years - more complex = more to go wrong. Compare the series rovers, defenders, early rangey's - with the vehicles we have now. More electronics more gadgets - all things to go wrong. not to mention the influence that Lucas prince of darkness has over the marque. BMW were perhaps better caretakers than Ford are likely to be - JMHO but take a look at the 2005 Disco to see what is happening to Lanrover under ford - Can you say Honda Element If Land Rover was really serious about being anything in the future other than just another shopping mall SUV manufacturer - they would bring the defender back now (in its current form) - The Disco would have diesel, Range Rover, Range Stormer would still exist as the luxury end of the spectrum - but LR/Ford should follow the KISS principle. Rupert, It's part of the Land Rover culture. Take it farther.... some folks think that "real" Land Rovers have leaf springs, like my Series III. Some folks feel that my 32-year-old 88" is too modern, what with it's padded dash - "Real Series have metal dashes" is a common phrase uttered by SIIa owners. Others feel that the Series II was the best Solihull produced before messing it up when it became a IIa, and thus any Rover after 1960 isn't worth having. Series I folks think the Series II went to far, and that the '57 Series I is better. And, there are some folks that think that the original 1948 80" Series with the headlights behind the grille is the only Rover to have. But, if you get one of the pre-production ones, you might get a galvanized chassis, whereas the productions ones weren't, so, a pre-production Land Rover is the best you can have. FWIW..... -L
