Any one know of a good independent LR mechanic in the Denver area. I am looking for someone to check out a used Discovery before I buy it. Thanks.

Dave's European

Denver CO, 80231-3221
Tel: 303-337-1803

Great shop, been using them for a few years now.
Tell them I passed along the number, maybe I'll get a break on my service this week - just kidding...well, not really :-)

That is that Safari 4X4 place in Wheat Ridge. I haven't used them but I've talked to them on the phone & they seem cool. They were going to do my rear pinion seal for like $100.00 (I had the part). Anyone have any experiences with them??

I purchased some wheels from Safari 4x4 and they've helped me out with diagnostics before...really cool guys.
They've always been up front with me and I've heard good things about them from others.

Just my .02

Adam--
just out of curiousity I'm looking at a valve job and I was going to go to Safari 4x4...but if you thought Dave's did such a great job I'll run it through them....
about how much did it cost?---about how long did it take?
just curious.
Thanks
justin

I have heard of some positive experiences with Safari (formerly Kifaru 4X4), but the majority of people with whom I've discussed that shop have only had bad things to say. Personally, I've only spoken with them on the phone, but it was enough to scare me away, even if I didn't take into account what the others said.
It's a shame, they offer quite a few services (similar to ECR) and they're local but I'll probably never take any of my vehicles there.

how do you know when you need a valve job. I have 80k on my disco and still runs pretty good, only overheating problem now when it gets hot outside. are there any symtoms to look for.

well first of all they replaced the head gaskets and did the valves, as well as having to send out the heads to get machined. I had them replace the plug wires and take a look at the transmission to see if there was going to be any problems down the road. Anyway dave said the the heads came from the factory improperly machined and that he has seen this sort of thing before. So he also did a few things for free like program my new FOB and took it upon himself to check on other things that might be wrong. It ran about $2600 and took about 4 days. He also warrintied the work for 1 year or 12000 miles. I would take it back to him for anything else.

We'd be happy to check over the Discovery you're considering buying. Email andrew @ thesharperauto.com if you're interested. So that this doesn't come off as pure commercial intent, I second Art's opinions on both Dave's European and Safari 4x4.

Thanks for the suggestions. I spoke to Dave's European. For $85.00 they will do a 100+ point inspection. No I just have to decide between 2 Disco's.

Any suggestions in Boulder? I had a pretty negative experience with First National last time I had work done there.

I have used Daves once and was extremely impressed. Very nice guys and I felt like they really took the time to help me out. It is too bad they are so far from my house and work. I have also used Safari 4x4 about 1/2 dozen times. I really like the mechanics there. I have not been there in about 1 year but the guy that used to work the front counter could use some work. He is a nice guy and I am not knocking him but I felt like he was always trying to push for extra services.

What about that Rover Tracks guy?? he is in Erie, if they do custom work maybe they would do service????

I dont know that i would take it to Safari 4x4 because i talked with them about a year ago and the were going to charge me $75 to put in four riv nuts after i already drilled the holes. so i went an bought a riv nut gun for $20 and did it my self. I just dont feel like i can trust them.

Art:

Are those guys still up in Nederland? I get a lot of calls from Boulder, and I've been at a loss as to where to send them close to home. Any good pics lately?

I'm not really sure Andrew. Since I'm using Dave's I haven't had a reason to call in at least a year - sorry.
