I just received the free replacement mirror from Magna Donelly, according to the archives I am supposed to pull the old mirror straight down (HARD) to remove it. If there's anyone who has done this first hand, I'd like to know just how hard are we talking here? Also, what are the chances I'll break the mounting bracket or the windshield itself?
Thanks

(1) Plenty hard
(2) Break the mounting bracket is unlikely
(3) Break the windshield is unlikely

Hey what do you know -- 500 posts without being banned...even with the heated wiper blades thread :-)

Hi Daniel,

I just got mine as well. I installed it with just a little fiberglass itch.

First remove the overhead "Chubby" I think 8 screws. Then remove the sun visors and sun visor clips. Be careful not to break the clips. I did and they cost $4 each. Once you have all of this down or out of the way. Looking straight up at the sunroof, reach the mirror plug to the left about 5 to 6 inches from the sunroof motor. Mine was bolted down. Remove the bolt and then unplug the cable. Now with a little strength, pull straight down on the mirror until it pops off.

To put the new one on just push the mirror up until it clicks into place. Reverse the directions to get everything back on.

Good luck!

Chris

Thanks all,
Chris,
What are you referring to by sunvisor clips? Do you mean the clip for the visor that folds down or are you referring to the clip for the shade you pull over the sunroof? (I don't see how this could be involved, but just so I'm not confused...)

I didn't remove the visors or map pockets at all. I just opened the little panel where the sunroof switches go. The plug was right there.

I had no choice but to remove the sun visors because I could not get my hand to the plug "guess my hands are to big".

You need to take out the little plastic "snaps". These are the ones that keep the visor from knocking you in the head if you push on the gas to hard.

This allow me to drop the headliner down far enough to get my hand to the plug.

You might want to try what Alyssa said first. I just could not get to the plug that way. It took me about 30 mins for the entire job.

I hope they gave you one like I got. They sent me one with map lights on it. I feel kind rich now.:-)

This is true... being a girl, I guess I have smaller hands.
LUCKY! I was hoping for map lights. No such luck. They actually sent me the exact same mirror I already had.

Actually, they asked me what features I would like on my mirror...He He. I only had auto dim and map lights, so I stuck with those. I regretted not asking for a compass/temp gauge until I read that the plugs don't match.

FREE ! A $300 value, depending on who you talk to. Go to magnadon.com and use the "contact us link. I just replaced my 96 last Saturday. Thrilled that I now have map lights. It's the little things... PS, I didn't have to remove the visor clips. I removed the little nut holding the tab that secures the connector in place so that the whole assembly could be pulled out where I could separate it.

Questions: After removing the overhead cubby (with map pockets, etc.) and the sunvisor assembly, how do you pull the headliner? Is it glued or snapped into place? Or, can you pull just enough to get the new plug underneath it?

Jan,
You can pull it enough to feed through. The headliner is wide open to the connector so there's no need after you pull the overhead cubby. Check your email BTW, There can't be all that many Janaka Pereras around, I only know one...teufelhunden.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info- my new mirror arrived yesterday. I was pumped to see map lights- but expected they wouldn't work, as the old mirror doesn't have them. Now then, am I right in thinking we have to send the old mirror back? I seem to remember being told that.
Cheers,
Paul.

Greetings all,

Installation was a breeze...took all of 20 minutes. Removed the 8 or so screws holding the overhead cubby/storage in place and pulled it down until I saw the wire connecting the mirror. The mirror wasn't hard to remove..just pulled down and it popped off. New mirror slid on. Job done.

Those of you who have installed your new replacement mirrors, did the mounting area on it look just like the old one? My replacement mirror has the typical rear view mirrow attachment point so I'm wondering if I didn't get some kind of adapter piece or just got the wrong replacement mirror. It hooks up just find and works, even map lights, just can't mount it.

thanks

?? I think mine was identical to the old one. If yours doesn't fit over the metal thing, which is glued to the windshield, you probably got the wrong mount. I'm sure they'll swap it out for you.

Well, just got back to a computer. New mirror installed, Piece of cake. Thanks for the help and they told me not to bother sending the old one back. I suppose they did all the r&d they had to do to figure out why the design was so bad. Also, the new mirror seems to be way better in the headlight dimming department or it could just be that I was getting used to being blinded...

It's the best and got mine today! Funny how they value the mirror at $50.00 and Land Rover is 5 or 6 times hire.

Just installed mine today. 97 disco. Had to drop the overhead map bin, in order to unclip the plug.
To take the old mirror down, I kind of karate chopped it, and it came right off. New one went right in, plugged it in, and everything was back together in another 10 minutes.

Nice mirror, love the map lights!

Thanks dweb for turning me on to Magna Donelly's offer, and thanks Magna Donnelly for the great mirror.

Good to know Daniel. I was wondering why they did not provide a return address on the shipping slip.
BTW, I had to drop overhead map-bin as well in my 97, but the sun visors stayed in place, no need to remove for my set-up.

I just replaced my mirror after an ordeal with the fiberglass. However a couple of problems.

After finishing up, I had the interior light on the "on" position which created a spark when bolting the interior light assembly back on(I guess because of the ground).

Now my interior lights do not work, along with my radio, and my clock which resets to 1:00 everytime I switch the ignition to "on".

Is this a fuse issue? If so, where are the fuse for the interior lights, the clock, and the radio located. I hope it's the fuse and not something major. Please help! Cannot sleep because of this problems. Thanks.

I'm sure its a fuse under the steering wheel...

Finley got my mirror today. Then the mounting bracket was wrong. Same mirror, and same plug, just the wrong mounting bracket. But to get my old one off all I had to do is pop off the cover where the homelink usally goes , and the cover where the sun roof switches go. Everthing was accesable fron there. I did not have to drop the console or sun visors. Took less than 2 minutes. To bad the new mirror does not work.

Has anyone that has had their mirror replaced by Donnelley called and spoke to anyone in particular? I’ve E-mailed their customer support about this five times in the past six months (early last week that latest) and have yet to receive a single response. If someone could supply the name of someone that helped them out, I will try calling. My Last experience calling was a run around and I’ve been disconnected a couple of times as well. Thanx for any help, it would be nice to have a Mirror I could see things in again
