While driving last Saturday to take my son back to college (96 D1 with 153K miles) I noticed that the tach was sitting at zero. The outside temperature when we started out was about minus 2F. The vehicle was still driving OK for while, but I noticed a loss in power. Decided to turn around and only got about another 5 miles when all gauges failed and car died. An hour later, AAA towed us back home on a flat bed.

When I got home I put a charger on battery, but I didn't take a charge. Since it was the original battery I felt it owed me nothing and have bought a new one. Started right up, but tach still does not work and only measure battery voltage across the battery terminals, indicating alternator or regulator not working.

Checking in the manual I noticed an obscure note: "The charging lamp is part of the charging circuit. When there is lamp failure there will be loss of charge. Lamp should be checked frequently and a spare carried." Needless to say I just went out to check the lamp. (turn key to II position) and it was not illuminated.

Has anyone changed this lamp? I could not find instructions on procedure. I'm hoping I don't have to take a significant portion of the counsel apart to reach it.

When I've installed the new lamp, then I'll check the alternator function.

D1 remove 2 screws in little holes in dashboard behind steering wheel. Lift of cover . There you can see the rear of the tach and other meters.
Check connections, and replace lamp.
Assembly is reverse of former.

Thanks Joey

with that information we sucssefully removed the dash and the bulb. New bulb was under $8.00 at dealer (a shock)! Last one left. When temperature goes above 10 deg or so we'll install and test

In the mean time does anyone have a schematic of the charging system? Please post as an attachment.

Thanks

Arthur, the alternator lamp is part of the charging circuit but NOT part of the tachometer circuit. Get you an alternator lined up.

I got a Bosch rebuild from Nathan that works well and has 2 yr warranty.

I spent $250 having a local rebuild first that was a waste of money.

Easy to install the alt.

By all means replace the lamp and hope for the best, but at 153k don't hold your breath.

Rover-on!

I've got a almost new rebuilt alternator sitting here in my garage if you would be interested. I need to do some housekeeping and get that thing out of here. I upgraded to a Mean Green and this one was on my truck for less than 5k miles. It came from Advance Auto and I think has lifetime replacement.

Thanks Joe.

As it's 12 degrees or so this morning I'll find out later today. That's why I wanted to look at a schematic, to see how the tach sending unit fit in the picture.

updates later today....
