The ABS on my '94 disco was unplugged when I bought the truck. I called the dealer and was told this may be due to worn swivel housings, or something like that, eating the front abs sensors. They want me to bring it in for diagnosis. Problem is the dealer is 100 miles away. Can I check the play in the front joints myself?

Over the phone diagnosis are mostly junk, unless you know what the situation is, can describe it well and trust the other guy.....why not reconnect it and see what happens?

Stub axle bearing has had it or installed too far into the stub axle leaving too much axle end play. Allows the axle/cv to move out of round. The ABS reluctor ring is on the outside of the cv, hence the ABS problem.

The swivels probably need new bearings, thrust washers too to correct for wear. If not too many miles just remove some shims to tighten it up. The procedure is on the web. Does your steering wheel shimmy after hitting freeway ruts at speed?

Chris, I have plugged the ABS back up and it activates even on dry roads and is definetly messed up.

Geoff, The truck drives great, no shimmy, seems nice and tight. That is why I wanted to check it. I don't think it is bad.

Here is the problem. My ABS was unplugged when I got the vehicle. No problem there, I don't care whether I have ABS or not. Problem is that on wet or snow covered roads the front wheel lock way to soon and I get next to nothing out of the back. Back lines have been blead and the calipers are working, they are getting some pressure but I suspect not enough. I suspect the brake pressure regulating valve. I thing the Land Rover Guy suspected it too but he wants to diagnose the ABS first. I just want to get my back brakes functioning so I will have normal, pre ABS, brakes.
