Quoted $250 for this to be done. Does this sound too steep?

Outrageous...It's $50.00 in parts including the filter which I would only change out at 30K anyway. Otherwise change the fluid per the archives on this subject. D1's are easier than D2s (unless you have to do the filter).

$250 is the norm if you're paying somebody to do it right. The parts are not the issue. Most shops remove the y-pipe and the front crossmember to access the transmission pan. Check the labor time for either of those parts and add it all together. Don't forget the 9 liters of ATF. $250's a bargain :-)

Michael,

Do you have a D1 or D2?

If you have a D2, the transmission fluid/filter change is fairly simple. Dean Brown has a write-up on the process here:

I have A D1. Guy said he would have to drop catyl. converter--lots of labor--for a complete flush. Car has 130000, ive had it since 47000---and haven't changed the fluid of filter yet.

Land Rover recommends that the trans filter be changed only once at 30K miles. I had mine changed at 30 and 60k before the updated service bulletin came out.
