I checked Kelly Blue Book just out of curiosity to see the value of my 1997 Disco. I bought it for $18,000 with about 40,000 miles when the bank said it was worth $21,000 almost 3 years ago. Now 3 years and about 50,000 miles later KBB tells me $8,500 (to a private party). Sum Bitch!! |

And KBB is high! Don't feel so bad. Bought mine brand new for right at $40k. Now KBB says <$6k. Oh well, she's part of the family now. |

I noticed the same thing with my '97. But then I surfed a couple of online auto sales sites with large vehicle volumes. (autotrader.ca / canadatrader.com) My conclusion, Kelly Blue Book, and the likes, are full of $hit!

I found a (Canadian) link for '97's. They are for Ontario, but are likely similar across Canada. To get US dollars multiply CDN $ x 0.78. http://search.trader.ca/Results.asp?BFROM=1&BAD=N&BPRICE=N&BTYPE=B&BCAT=2&BOREGI ON=-1&BYEAR1=1997&BYEAR2=1997&BPRICE1=&BPRICE2=&BKEYWORD=&BMAKE=806&BMODEL=DISCO VERY&q1=%3D+2&c1=@category&q3=806&c3=@makeid&q4=22029&c4=@modelcode&q5=&c5=@adcopy&q6=%3E%3D+1997 +and+%3C%3D+1997&c6=@year&q7=&c7=@askprice&SortBy=askprice&SortOrder=d&DisplayTy pe=pictures&DisplayRowCount=12&mknm=806&mdnm=DISCOVERY&q14=-1&c14=@subcategory&s ubcategory=-1&CAT=2

Most cars lose about 25% of their value in the first year. You would be hard pressed to find any 10 year old vehicle that has book value of more than $5000. This "blue book" system doesn't give much incentive for people to maintain the cars. On the other hand you can buy a millionaires car for only 5 grand. |

"This makes buying used auto/truck a beter choice IMO." it has always been a better choice. 1-2 years old, under 20k miles is the best "value." Look at the 03 disco S, in July they were getting $33,000 to $35,000 for one, now they are running thru auction for $21,000 to $23,000 with 8k-13k miles. talk about depreciation. |
