Guys I need some tips on what I need to look at before buying a used Disco TDi 96. It has 160,000 km milage and the dealer said it was used previously by the owner to tow his boat. By the way I'll be the second owner if I buy this beauty! And, was serviced at Landrover's Malaysia until the warranty period expired. I've tested this beauty with my friend, who knows more about Land Rover than I do, he he said it should be ok! Point to note though, my friend and I personally feel that the accelerator has a loose feel to it, i.e. like we really need to press it deep, to move the disco. Is this a sign of an untold engine problem?

They have a long throttle travel and yes you need punch it to get them off the mark. Two main faults with this car are timing belt failure and gear box main shaft failure(particularly on 5 speed), there are retro fitts for both make sure they have been done.

100k miles on it....reckon its time for bushes, springs (especially since its been towing) and shocks unless these have been updated by the PO. Consider too rubber hoses at this stage of its life. Other than that, if it is well maintained and doesn't smoke too much you could be on to a good 'un

Shaun, that's what my friend told me too, on the timing belt, and lucky me, the previous owner has just changed the timing belt. And to add more info, it's an automatic discovery. Chris, thanks, I'll take note of that and try to find out more.

I'll update more on the disco, when it's MINE! My precioussssssss!

If used for towing a boat, normally use it for launching at the boat ramp too. Check for salt water rust generally under the car especially the rear wheels hubs & discs, calipers, bumper, crossmember and tow bar area. I religiously hose mine down with fresh water after every fishing trip. A water sprinkler running underneath the truck for 1/2 hour is a neat trick too!

1) Chk if engine is on the list of cambelt problem (the alignment problem - i.e.: far more to be renewed than just the belt)
2) If manual: Chk if gearbox is on the problems list (transfer box input gear/mainshaft problem)3) Chk sills for rust (expensive+lotsa job).
4) Chk rear floor (load area, under carpet, under soundproofing) for rust (lotsa job).
5) Lots of things on the list for renewal-might-to-come, but that's the reason why older vehicles are cheaper than new ones... (bushes, clutch, springs, dampers, injectors etc. See: http://www.sf.hiof.no/~frodehaa/Specs.htm#How long will it last?

Ok, I got the land rover already, and tested it last weekend, I went up to Cameron Highlands and climbed a mountain there. The disco took me to the trail starting point. No problem.

But, I discovered this, when I accelerated over 90-100 km/h, the steering starts to wobble... kinda loose feel to it? idea?? Does this need repair?

And, I observed a spot of black oil (engine oil) on the garage floor ..not much.. but I think it's a concern... what is that?? explaination? apart from that all is sweet!

What are the tires like? When i first purchased my 95 disco the PO had put two new tires on the front and had the XPC's on the rear. The Tires were worn in the rear enough to cause a shakin' at about 75mph. If not the case check alignment. If you don't mind asking what did you pay?
