I have a friend that is challenging me that four wheel drive (I think he means those vehicles that are NOT all wheel drive) doesn't work when you are in Reverse. I told him I'm certain that it does...but he has gotten me thinking...saying some mechanic told him that once. Now I'm confused and feeling stupid....

HELP? Any responses?!

They are probably referring to the hubs, if the are locked or not. The older semi-automatic hubs that were around in the 80's would mechanically lock in forward and unlock in reverse. The IH Scout / Warn Lock-O-Matics, when in Auto, would lock in forward and reverse. They only momentarily unlocked when shifting from forward to reverse. Rovers don't have hubs, they have 3 differentials with the center diff that can be locked.

Mark, that is what I was thinking. (and i know Rovers don't have hubs...we were talking more about Fords, etc.) So, with all vehicles now that utilize electronic 4wd systems, that would be irrelevant?

Couldn't resist. My rover has free-wheeling hubs.... :-)

You mean discos. RRC for a few years had a B/W viscous.

FWHs aside, seems like newer rigs in 4-locked have it going forward or reverse.

SSV,

I think most of the new 4wd systems operate in forward and reverse but hey, I could be wrong. For 5 years Toyota's automatic locking hub unlocked when you reversed. Guess they never thought you would need 4wd reverse?! The electronic 4wd systems are just electric solenoids doing the mechanical work. Traction control is just the logical opposite of ABS.

Where is that "Water Road" video? I remember it clearly showing a disco spinning its wheels in reverse, all four. There is your proof.

I remember my dad had two Izuzu Troopers and both of them had automatic FWH. If I remember correctly, they did not unlock when the truck went into reverse. I suppose that is really good. My friend (brace yourself) uses his Nissan Xterra a lot for his work (geologist, therefore not a lot of pavement) and he has never had such a problem.

I've read in many a 4 wheeling magazine about kits and other front axle modifications to convert the hubs from automatic to manual hubs for all sorts of full size trucks, etc. I guess they are durable in stock configuration but when you start adding bigger tires, more weight and all of that good stuff then they must not fare well. Of course it is probably just the guys fearing a bad breakdown in the middle of nowhere and not being able to fix it up.

It seems like most rigs now (including LRs) have AWD/permanant 4WD so FWH are not possible. But remember, discos have hubs, but not FWH. Hubs are what attaches the wheel to the axle. If you ain't got no hubs, then your disco sitting on a bunch of jack stands.

Max T.
