Sometime over recent weeks, without my noticing exactly when, my '95 Disco's antenna has ceased to telescope down when I switch to CD from radio or turn the radio off... it's permanently 'up'... I don't suppose there's some button on my radio I should be double-checking? Or, if not that, a cheap fix? (I'd try a cold shower but that's the point - putting my Disco through the car wash does not seem like a good idea until it can successfully periscope down first.)

Sorry dude. Many of us don't have auto antennas. Good luck.

Well, the shop is going to try lubrication.

I've read elsewhere (or was it here once I finally trawled more carefully through the archives) that a simple replacement antenna (non-automatic) and a little elbow grease is often a good, cheap fix.

I actually would've preferred if it were manual. If they made Model T's with a respectable-looking lift and offroad tires, I would probably be driving that...

Not long ago I spoke with an automotive industry chap who extolled the virtues of future autos when there will be significantly more solid-state electronics and fewer mechanical parts.

I just silently shuddered. (I'm sure others here have plenty of valid opinions in support of the idea of more solid state electronics in vehicles. But still..)

Make sure that your antenna is not putting a drain on your battery if it is not extending/retracting all the way. My auto antenna did just that a few months back and drained the battery....put a $12 rubber 'whip' antenna in its place and have been pretty happy. I will probably put a similar auto antenna back in at some point...the one I had gave really good reception in remote areas.
