I was happy to get my new lockers in detroit (rear) Tru Trac (front) but was very let down when I took it to the trails. Going up steep grades both front tires spin and appear to be working fine (if any thing I was prepared to be let down with the tru trac not the detriot) but the rear would turn either tire. I tried a lot of throtle, a little, tapping the brakes and both tires would'nt turn but the front was spinning like mad. Is this normal or am I missing something? It makes me feel like I pissed away a lot of money. Any help?

His profile says 98 d1, but that could have changed....assuming its still the d1 I'd question the cdl too

Sorry, Its a 98' D1 and i'm still not sure about the CDL issue but i'm under the understading that the 98' doesn't have it. Right? I really don't know how to check the transfer case etc... for proper operation. I had the thirds built and i just put em' in so I'm pretty sure the are right. But i don't know what to check next.

yes it has it.. maybe you never really needed the lockers and all you had to do was move the little lever to the left.

Read your manual on how to operate the CDL or do a search on this site. All DI's have CDL.

Perry,
I almost feel sorry for you.......... you are going to get hammered tomorrow when everyone comes back to the board!!! The search feature on this board works extremely well and within a short period of time most questions can be answered without posting a new thread.... FWIW...

Perry: don't worry get muddy! With your set up, you'll find the cdl is rarely needed except in those scenarios you posted...ie uphill climbs....elsewhere I leave mine out...
now I hope that your cdl actually works........the linkage seizes up if not used

So dude didnt lock his center diff and probably doesnt even know how too. No big deal , the guy is just getting started...He will now.........Perry , it will make a whole word of differene. The only sad part is that you wont have a good comparison to how it would have performed pre lockers..

Kyle
P.S I have seen ATLEAST one dumb ass posting from pretty much everyone participating on this site so you should probably cut the guy a break...

Perry, IMO You can not waste money on lockers! unless you don't wheel or you wheel like a gurly man.(lol)..
anyhow...If your get your CDL working (which might be seized from not being used.) . A light should come on the dash when your cdl is engaged...if the cdl works your locker should work and you'd better push that truck hard to get your moneys worth outta those lockers!! lol

3000 for detroit and TT is also a ton of money. I got my detroit and TT for 1000 total. Once you get the CDL engaged you'll be fine.

looks like perry isnt the only one with less then a complete knowledge of how these trucks work:-)

CDL is your friend and it keeps you from having to beat up the truck to concour very difficult terrain.

I once posted how to clean off spilled coke from the radio buttons, so I am pretty sure I can I have the dumbass trophy too. I dont see why you would have wasted the money, once you get your CDL working I think you will have a very capable truck. Just watch out for using too much of the go pedal or you will be spitting axle shafts out like theres no tomorrow.

I brought this on myself so I'll take the beating! I WILL get a manual though after this you can bet. I have already been out on the trails almost every weekend and i can't even tell you how embarrassed I am. But I do USE this D1 so I don't really feel I wasted my money on the lockers. I was just amazed at how I could never get traction on the trail. Imagine that! What is really cool is what I was getting thru with out CDL. I can't wait to go again. And the $3000 was for det/tt ,4.11's and rear HD axles. I should clear that up. Anyway, believe it or not I have been doing moderate off roading for years but I am new to Disco's so don't beat me up too bad!

Perry, you have the same setup I have done on my '95. So far I haven't been let down, though I found myself in "do over" situations at Truckhaven. For the most part, tire pressure and proper brake/throttle contol are paramount.
The TT can be "tricked" by applying brake pressure.

Perry, don't feel bad. You didn't waste your money. In my opinion, you did it the right way by adding the HD rear axles, and since you had the diffs open anyway, it was a good time to put in 4.11 gears. Presumably you are running larger than stock tires, too?

Anyway, just slide the T-case (High/Low) lever over to the left the next time you go out, and you will notice a huge difference. And of course pull it all the way towards you to go in low gear, too. :-)

Don't want to sound like a prick...BUT:

Its so sad that people just to lockers without even knowing their own damn trucks! You have to climb the ladder in 4-wheelin' just like everything else if you wanna know what the hell you're doing!

Perry Discojunky!
Never mind worrying you spent too much on lockers, 'cos now you have them, and own a truck with lots of more potential than you'd ever imagined! Learning curve might be steep, but your vehicle is now way above most of us!
So my congratulations, no condolations!!!

Battered and bruised Perry stumbles to his feet...
From his torn jacket he pulls out an owners manual he obtained from his local land rover dealer (its even for a 98'). He slips into the shadows and all you can hear are the sounds of pages turning as he softly mumbles to himself.

Don't worry Perry the year is long and there will surely be a lot of dumbass questions this year. Like how to change wiper blades, and etc. Sounds like a sweet set up now, go have fun. There are a lot of people on this site that talk smack and have never been away from the soccer fields.

Perry,

Never mind it has happened to the best.

On the subject of daft things, here in the UK there are guys putting big tyres on there Land Rovers and not changing the diff ratio's! Can you believe it? What's the point, you lose all your gearing for serious stuff and you end up with broken bits if you dare to give it some gas. What's even funnier is when they fit heavy duty axles to stop breakage but still leave the diffs standard. Changing to 4.7's is so cheap and they are just as strong as a 3.5 and you get your gearing back. It gives us a good laugh though.

Let me know what you think of the Detroit as I a thinking of fitting one.
