What are the main differences between the 98 and 99s? Did the 99 SD come standard with CDL? Im more concerned about mechanical or off road capability than luxury options. But is there a real big jump in quality between the years. Are there any sore spots for either. Additionally, how rare are the 99 SD with cloth? This is what I think I want, but cant find a white or black one. Thanks and hopefully I can be an official member with a new used Disco in my driveway. |

From what I understand a 99 (D2) does not have a standard CDL, but it is pretty easy to add one. I have even seen kits for this on ebay. As far as quality I head that D2 are supposed to be more "car like" but it was a new model with a lot more electronics to go wrong. From what I heard by 1998 L/R had gotten most of the problems resolved with the D1s that with the fact that it has less electronics to go wrong, is why I bought a 98 D1. Good luck with what ever you go with. |

99 SD came standard with CDL. 98 and 99 are identical mechanically. I don't know if it is possible to get cloth in a 99 SD, because I have never seen one. I believe that leather was standard on all Discovery I models in 98 and 99. 99 SDs were produced in 1998, as '98s, but LR was required to badge the remaining '98s as '99s because of their late arrival. |

John, I have a 99 SD and to ad to Allyssa's statement, the 99 SD came a little more loaded due to the DII changeover. You'll find leather, heated seats, duel roofs,CD Changer, alot came with factory add-ons like brush bar & such. I have been very pleased (mechanically) with my SD. 42k and no major or even minor problems with it yet. Just my $.02 Steven |

I know that 99 SDs still had OPTIONAL sunroofs, and CD Changer. (We have one right now that has neither). I can't recall seeing one without Heated Seats. |

I have a 98 D1 SD. Cloth seats, no sunroof(s), manual seats. I talked to someone from LRM who contacted LR about that model and configuration and they said that they were extremely rare in that config for 98/99s because they were going to all models with leather with the bells and whistles. Only 5 made it into Canada that year so they do exist but are rare. |

Right, I was assuming US. Cloth was still available in Canada in 98 and 99. |

Thanks, for the help. I had found a 97 SD with no roofs, no power seats or heated seats, cloth, rear ac. I absolutely loved the truck, but it also had the ABS light on, was having some idle problems, and had some other mechanical problems that concerned me. So, I have been searching for a nice low mileage, well maintained 98 or preferably a 99, so I can beat the hell out of it. They are just getting hard to find. Unless I want to shell out $17K to a dealer. Guess I just need to be patient. Thanks again for your information and help |

Althought the benefit of getting one from a dealer is that it's probably certified with a 12 month extended warranty so you're less likely to have problems and if you do, your warranty should cover it. I guess that's the trade off between a dealer LR vs a private sale. |

What were the trim levels on the 99 DII & how do you tell the difference. Search turned up nothing. |
