My 96 disco has been making a rattling noise for sometime now and i finally figured out that the noise was coming from my catalytic converter. I figure i really just need to buy a new one. So i called the local dealership and they priced one at being $1,900. I really just think thats really high. so i've done some searches and found some better prices but i just wanted to buy from a place that is reliable. i only need from the cat up. so if anyone knows of a place i could get a new catalytic converter from for a better price i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

How many miles do you have? They are warranted to 80K miles. Having a 96, you might be out of that range though.

I sell affordable aftermarket Y pipe converters to owners who don't want to spend the $ on Genuine and will probably bang it up off road anyway. $450 + ship.

You can get a simple CATCO universal replacement cat for cheap $$. $1900 is insane. Go to your local muffler shop and tell them you need a CATCO, I'm sure it'll be about $1800 Less than the dealer.

You definitely can get a "universal" replacement cat from the local muffler shop, but not all muffler shops know what they are doing and if the catalyst doesn't have the same metal content as the O.E. cat, your check engine light (OBD II) will set. The same will happen if you gut it. Not saying you have to go O.E., but make sure your source is reliable.

This issue seems to pop up every week or so. Brian your 96 is OBDII system. You can get universal Cats but they should be OBDII compliant. OBDII universal cats will run you about 200 - 250 installed. Yes they are different than the OBDI universal cats (which only oost about 100 dollars installed) and sometimes can cause the Check engine light to come on.

Your options are:
a) buy a OEM "direct fit" replacement from a dealer (OUCH)
b) Buy the OEM "direct fit" replacement from a aftermarket (good fit less ouch) (about 400 - 1200 dollars)
c) Install universal OBDII cats. (you can replace just the bad cat, but if it's both you might be cheaper to buy the "direct fit" aftermarket. Will be about the same price.)
d) Install Universal OBDI cats. (Cheapest option, about 200 - 250 installed for both, but might cause Check engine light to come on.)

A lot of people will pick option (d), I wouldn't recommend it plus, not every muffler shop will do it.

Hope this helps, I own a muffler shop and give members a very good price on Cats. Email me if you need more info.

I had mine replaced at 59-60k/mi. My old Rover Shop in CA did it no questions asked. Of course if you read the fine print of the warranty in the mannual it leaves the dealers to ask for proof that you performed all maintenance at a Rover dealer or with the same parts and methods, ie. they'll ask to see your maint. log with receipts if they don't freel like footing the bill. My buddy with a 98 had his go at 81k/mi and a call to LR customer service in Jersey w/ some ass chewing got it done for the bubble.

$150 for a replacement CAT, installation and tax. A local welding/muffler shop did the work and the truck runs great.

Check out NRP (Northwest Rover Performance) Exhaust. They specialize in stainless systems for Land Rovers. They make a Y-Pipe that actually has dual downpipes on each side. The cost is something like 800 bucks. I have their after-cat pipe and it has lived on both my 89 RR and my 96 Discovery. Awesome product, helps me get almost 18 mpg on long trips!

thanks for the info guys it'll really help me out i may check into the shop that i listed the link above to and if that falls through i'll just end up at a local muffler shop. i also thought about gutting the cat but then i remembered i wasn't driving a jeep and i already live in TN and don't want to look like an even bigger red neck. i also thought about putting a sheet metal screw in there to see if that would help the rattle but anyways i'll keep you guys posted on what i do.

Can we just take the cats out all together? Where I live we are not required to pass a DEQ test or anything so it doesn't matter and I would like the extra horsepower! I have heard about converters that actually "trick" the ECU in thinking that there is a well operating cat when there really isn't one at all (like if it is removed for more horsepower). It is a sensor of sorts that just replaces the old sensors. That way the Check Engine light will not trigger. Anyone know about these?

As a continuation of the Catylitic Converter Conversation. Do NRP Y Pipes really give you better gas mileage? It does not say that on their web site. It says better horsepower is that the same? I was thinking if this can get me 2 more miles to the gallon and I'm paying about $.10 a mile now. So at 2 more miles that is a savings of $.20 a gallon. So after 4000 miles it would pay for itself correct?

Sure, just take the cats out altogether. Land Rover just put them in to give unemployed cat makers something to do as part of the European welfare program.

Rob Caulfield, just tell yourself whatever it takes to get the NRP. Regardless of "increased mileage & horsepower" the NRP shit is some quality stuff. I'm waiting to hear back from NRP on OBDII compliance of their cats in that $800 Y-pipe...

Does CATCO make a Catylitic Converter to fit a DISCO 2? On the CATCO website all that I saw were DISCO 1 Converters.

So... a couple related questions if I may... hows $300 and change *each* for an independent (reputable) Land Rover repair shop to replace the two (someone confirm there are two?!) catalytic converters on my '96 Disco?

Also, just to check, if it's a smidge under 80k, is it *really* still covered by warranty... and if so how does one go about getting warranty repairs - can they be done by an independent dealer or must be at a LR dealer?

Thanks,

Donna

As I should have asked in the prior post... how does it work that there are two catalytic converters on a Disco? Just curious what design benefits are offered vs. one.
