My 99 D1 which is designed to cross the Kalahari broke down in the WalMart parking lot. It would not start. I checked and had ZERO fuel pressure at the rail when cranking. Checked the power at the fuel pump, also ZERO.

The fuses for the ECU and fuel pump were fine, the inertia switch checked fine too. I went to my local LR dealer and picked up a fuel pump relay for $11 a smallish yellow cube.

When I looked in the passenger side panel there were about six or seven of those smallish yellow cubes. I tested each and every one by swapping out the new one and taking a reading at the fuel pump while turning the key..... NADA ZERO ZIP!!

Well, to get the thing home I used a jumper from the positive batery terminal to the inertia switch, 38 psi fuel pressure and drove home.

After much wire tracing and meeter probing I find this TRW black box next to the window washer tank on the passenger side fender beneath the hood. The connector has one baked spade. I clean it off and POOF! The circuit now works.

Here is my question. What the HECK is the little black box. It seems the be the fuel pump relay. It clicks when the key turns on and clicks again about 5 seconds later when the fuel pump turns off (if the key is left on with out starting).

What gives? Not the little yellow cube as the dealer had supplied.... is this the REAL fuel pump relay???? HELP!?

Its called a MFU (Multi Function Unit). It is your fuel pump relay. I have a brand new one if you need it. $107.00

Eric,

The fuel pump relay should be a silver box located in the passenger footwell panel. My 98 D1 does use the silver fuel pump relay,it instead has a black box by the window washer bottle under the hood. (Passenger Side)

When my fuel pump failed, I searched for a fuel pump relay on the passenger footwell which the dealer insisted. They were wrong, so I searched and traced wires. After some research found that some Discovery's have the black box fuel relay under the hood.

Fuel relay was fine, replaced fuel pump and has worked fine.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the info. Zach, mine seems to be working for the time being. It was the actual connector that plugs into it that failed. The purple and white wire female spade was crispy and only conducting intermittently.

It would fail to start about once a month or so, crank and crank and crank. I would leave it thinking it was flooded, come back in 15 minutes and BAM it would start right up. I'm actually glad it failed once and for all so I could find the "Smoking Gun" and fix it once and for all.

Zach, did your MFU fail? Or did it turn out to be something else like the fuel pump or inertia switch?
