This weekend I tried to scale a very loose uphill with deep rocky ruts, resulting in the truck being caught on the chassis cross-member.StuckFunny thing is that as I tried to free the truck, both front wheels spun (fine) but rear didn't turn at all. How is this possible with CDL engaged? My truck is auto with standard open diffs.

Anre, did you engaged it after you got caught? Wheels need to move a bit in order for locks to engage. Overwise its pretty weird, as they should at least try to move, if locked.

Sergei, no it was engaged before. At least the CDL light was on, which should mean it was engaged.

Humh. It does look fishy... Did someone, by any chance managed to engage parking brake? They would have same effect with locked CDL...

Anyway - easiest way to check, as always - just crank it up (all wheels in the air) on jack stands or just two shop jacks, lock it, and then try (with friend) to stop front pair or rear pair of wheels. They should try to move (well, one of them at least :-)).

If that will not work, you probably got CDL linkage dead, or whatever that thing called that actually engage it.. In which case you will need to seek advice of person far more professional with Rovers than i am.

I suppose anything's possible, but it was only me in the car and I definitely didn't pull the parking brake. I'll jack it up this weekend and test as per your suggestion. Will have to sort out the bust steering damper at the same time...

Anre - just chock and put it in neutral and jack up one wheel. If you can turn it, your CDL is not locked.

pre detroit I frequently used the left foot gently on the brake pedal system to ensure that torque was transferred away from a spinning wheel...kinda a DIY ETC....got me through obstacles that better equipped vehicles, including 90s couldn't...on that kind of bumpy hillclimb, it would have paid dividends at keeping the momentum going......cos all you needed was a little more.....that and a working cdl of course....

I really pulled all the stops to get up that hill, but alas, there I was with front wheels turning merrily...
Thanks for the advice, will let you know
