The standard Discovery frame-mounted recovery hooks seem, well, inadequate. Those found on Hummers and Hummer IIs are much beefier. Available form Hummer dealers at bit over $100 a pair, they aren't a bad deal. With very minor griding on the inner faces they bolt right up where the old stock loops are monted. (Disco 2's with hitch's won't work.) You will likley need to clean out the mounting frame hole with a 1/2" drill. Unmount the Hummer hooks from their mount, and use new 1/2" bolts to mount the hooks to the frame. To really do it right, you could consider adding bushes to the hooks to compensate for smaller mounting bolt, but that is not necessary since the new 1/2" bolts are larger than the stock ones. |

$100 for 2 jate hooks is a bit pricey. If you know the dimensions, you can go to any tractor supply or logging equipment place & order the hooks for $40 including mounting hardware. I buy all of my recovery gear from a place that supplies all the loggers in the area with their equipment.. much cheaper & heavier ratings than most other stuff out there marketed to the 4x4 mod crowd.

The holes on the hummer hooks are too large, more work than it is worth in my opinion. |

Ed, do you have any pictures of the rings you are using? is the price $40 for the pair or each? they actually cheaper than $100 a pair too http://www.landroverstuff.com/jaterings.htm and they seem plenty strong http://www.expeditionexchange.com/action7/chinook_ocean_wmik_hr.jpg but i'm still curious to see what you have found. rd |
