Hello. I have a 97 Disco that has just started to make a lot of fan noise under the hood. The temp gauge is normal and rad fluid checks out. The climatic conditions are typical west coast winter so, no a/c. Is this typical of a fan clutch problem? Any info is much appreciated.

Are you sure is the fan clutch? Mine went bad last summer but it did not make any different noise, basically my car just overheated!! If your car is not overheating I doubt your fan clutch is bad.

Hi. Basically, As soon as I start the engine I can till a difference in fan noise. Particularily, when using 3rd gear at say 50 mph the fan noise is very loud. The only time I remember similar sound is on hot summer days climbing a hill. So, I thought maybe the fan is engaged full time now irrespective of the temp?

Your right it might be possible for the clutch to remain engage, swap the unit wiht a new or used one, the swap is pretty easy and from what you are saying you will know right off if it was the clutch. Also check the fan blades for any signs of cracks or broken blades that could also cause some noise or vibrations.

Good idea on checking the fan blades. Hopefully I can find a used one.

Thanks Tony.

The fan clutch on my '96 seized up last month. To quickly check, just try to spin the fan manually when your engine is off. It should freewheel. Mine wouldn't budge.

New one ran me $300 CDN. Really easy to change.

Hope you find a used one!

Cheers,

Shawn

Depending on how many miles you have on your original fan, over 75K, I would suggest replacing. Mine flew-apart at 80K, damn lucky that nothing was destroyed. Now I have solid aluminum fan.
Best approach I think to remove the fan-clutch, get a rubber strap-wrench to hold the water pump pulley from spinning and use a large pipe over the other wrench. Be careful when it finally releases that you don't go flying into your hood support bar.
My fan-clutch went bad, but did not lock-solid whereas others on this board have reported a solid-lock-up on failure.
