I want to replace my metal cable on my winch with synthestic winch line.

I am leaning towards the Amsteel blue line here:
http://www.okoffroad.com/stuff-winchrope.htm

How does this compare to the Masterpull DYNEX winch line found here:
http://www.okoffroad.com/stuff-winchrope-mp.htm

That Masterpull superline is sweet, but way too expensive.

Thanks for any additional info,

Jamil

JA,

I tried searching for you, but didn't find much that was relevant. What I'm unclear on is whether the Amsteel is a kevlar rope. Remember we chatted about this over the weekend? Make sure the Amsteel isn't nylon, due to the heat. You want the first wrap to have a sheath made of vinyl. So choose the one appropriate.

I went with 100' of 3/8, and an extension. If I were to do it again (and just might do it anyway), I would have gone with 80' on the winch. Makes it easier to get to that first wrap to get the most pull out of the winch. But that's purely my preference....

Oh dear lord... http://image.pbase.com/u39/jamooche/large/25277474.HTMLimg_1467_std.jpg

Bill Burke's site recommends Amsteel rope so it must be pretty good. What type of rope do you have?

About that photo...that's what happens when you give your camera to someone else.

Jamil,

I cannot tell you the difference between one or the other. Since November, I have been using the Masterpull 3/8" x 125' and am very happy because it is great to work with. Check out:

http://www.masterpull.com/item.cfm?itemid=9159

This is the line that I am running on a Warn 12K.

Paul

Paul, I figured they were quite similar. Just thought I would do some research before I buy. I have a 9.5ti so I am going to go with 5/16" x 125' Amsteel blue. I've used it before on my friends truck and it seems to work well. Although he suggests getting it shorter so it wraps better rather than for the strength benefit.

How much strength and better wrapping is really increaed by a 25' shorter rope? Probabally not that much.

I would get shorter, and just carry an extension. That will be more effcient.

Jamil - with the 9.5ti you have very good pull even on the outer wraps, so you might as well go for the longer line. On other winches it may not be a good idea.

Hi, I have the Amsteel Blue on mine, works great, hassle free...There is one thing though and it may play into your decision on how long to get, but you need to have more wraps on the drum than you would with a steel cable as the fiber cable doesn't get the same amount of grip on the drum that the steel cable does. I have seen more than once where the drum was turning and the line was slipping around the drum (particularly in cold wet conditions.) It seems pretty reliable if you have about 3/4 of the first layer completed before you put a good load on it and it should grip. Anybody else have similar experiences with this?

The pull on the 9.5ti is so fast, it's scary! Keep your hands far away from this one.

Kevin, I have read the same thing somewhere. The longer line should help guarantee that the first layer is left on the drum. I've never seen it unwound that far though.

Glue boat deck antislip etc onto the winch drum to hold synthetic rope so it doesnt slip.

the rockstomper line has a low melting point. why not get the X-line and have more heat resistance? prices are similar, service fine, UV dipped. i can't for the life of me figure why anyone would go with the Amstell type when the X-line everything plus more heat resistant.
