On my 97 D1 one of the headlights has burned out. Before I buy a stock replacement how are the Hella or IPF bulbs? Who has a good deal on them and what is involved in adding the heavier wiring and relay? |

Might take a look at the Sylvania SilverStar replacement bulbs. They cant compare with HID or for that matter the ones youre inquiring about, but they are considerably brighter than stock bulbs for a fraction of the cost of a full HID upgrade. Cost at Advanced Auto is 19.95 plus now the second is half price and you get a $6 rebate. So if they arent really what you want just chuck them. http://www.sylvania.com/auto/silverstar.htm

Will, I seem to recall that Hella makes a 55/100w and 80/100w halogen bulb (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/bmwexpress/repligbul.html) that would definitely require the upgraded harness (https://www.expeditionexchange.com/arb/wiringloom.htm) I have used the standard wattage "Xenon" bulbs with the blueish tinge. They did make a difference and are cheap for the outcome. As DW said, I have heard many very positive things about the Sylvania, and for $6 each, it's a good place to start. The ultimate would be to use one of the Philips H4 HID kits. These kits use about the same amount of power as factory H4 bulbs, but kick out a lot more light. Unfortunately, the kits I have seen don't have high beams, so it might be necessary to add something like the Hella 4000 Eurobeam to act as high beam. That could be overkill, since I haven't seen a Disco with the HID kit installed. Hope this helps. Victor

Will - regardless of what you do - go with the ARB or Painless Wiring headlight wiring loom kits - easy to install and make a huge difference with stock wattage bulbs. Instructions with the Painless kit are good and it is actually self-explanatory once you see it. High wattage bulbs half half or less the life of standard wattage and your headlamps get very hot and can crack easily. I use 90/110 watt bulbs, but put up with the downsides - just wanted to let you know of the other side of the coin. Good info on the Susqehanna site: http://catalog.com/susq/index.htm Bill |

Bill, Wow! 90/110 sound really bright. Are you using them on a street-going truck? If so, does the factory lens design allow you to not blind on-coming traffic. In your experience what will the factory lights handle with the harness upgrade, and without burning the retna of on-comming drivers? Victor |

Victor brings up a good point; I do believe some of the HID upgrades have been taken off the market because of brightness issues. I also believe that states have different guidelines regarding the max wattages of headlights and fog lights. Might want to check your local ordinances. It would bite to spend high dollar to upgrade only to be ticketed and told to remove said upgrade.

i used the "eurolite" super plasmsa i got it circuit city. They are a lot brighter with a very white, (hint of blue) light. Look brighter than my aux hella 5000's on the road. They are brighter than the hella H4 bulbs available at expeditionexchange and run about 30 bucks. Can't compare to true HID conversions but i think the light has improved dramaticly over stock. I really don't care for the Blue tint too much. Anyone know what type of set-up a 96 XJ6 has? My mother had one and the high beams on that thing were like nothing I have ever seen before on a stock car. Is there a bulb out there that has basicly a stock low beam, but a super bright high beam? |

Will - I also use the "E" code headlamps which make best use of all that extra light. I get some flashes from oncoming cars, but very few considering the wattage and lift on the truck. The "E" code lamps account for some of that. It is on a street truck, but legal it is not. Just try the loom upgrade and then go with a slightly higher bulb rating or the Sylvania bulbs - you'll probably like the result. Bill |

Will, Your aversion to the blue lights is fairly common. Many of them are actually just tinted blue for the look. I think the Sylvania bulbs are actually very white, but it is difficult to find a white bulb without a slight blue tinge. Regarding your Mom's Jaguar, without direct knowlege, it's tough to say. There have been some incredable advances in headlight lens and reflector technology. When combined with the HID they are extrordinarily effective. The problem is, unless you want to upgrade your whole light assembly you're stuck with the lens and reflector. If you had a D2 I think you could upgrade to the projector beam type that are on the 2003 Discovery. That, apparently, can be done, but will cost around $2000. There was a thread in the Disco Tech section a couple of months ago. Victor |

The only difference that I could tell between Silver Stars and the PIAA super whites that I had are that the PIAAs lasted longer. I have stock wiring and though they were both brighter then stock they were about the same as each other. However, only two weeks after I put the Silver Stars in a high beam burnt out. The PIAAs at least lasted a year. I almost never use my highbeams either so the thing was probably only turned on twice. Once to see that it worked and the second time when I was wheeling at night in the ice and snow. It burned out durring the night run. Just my 2 pennies. |

>However, only two weeks after I put the Silver Stars in a high beam burnt out.< Ive had mine now for around six months with no problems, unless you want to call people brighting me a problem. As to why yours stopped could you have got mud or water on them? I know they are somewhat susceptible to that. I have them in both my driving lights and fog lights and have nothing but good to say about them so far. The difference was much more notable in the fogs; in fact I run my fog and low beam instead of brights.

Nope, didn't get anything on it. Didn't touch it with my fingers putting it in or anything like that. Just got a crappy bulb. |
