I've been having some problems with misfires. I've got some good info from you all to include checking my Bosch P4 plugs, plug wires and maybe the need for a valve job. The question is are there any additives for cleaning valves and do they actually work? I don't want to be the guy who buys the "50 horsepower gasoline addative" but like I said before, I was dumb enough to buy this pig so that tells you something....

techron
sea foam
Although if you need valve job i don't think any of these will work. I used techron for preventative maintenance but still needed a valve job in the end.

I drive alot in the city though (some highway too)and since the valve job i have been driving like i stole it everyonce in a while to keep it cleaned out. We'll see in another 45K.

"Addditives" are only going to effect the intake valve. Burns up before it hits the exhaust valve stem.

Tom,
I,ve used seafoam with some success. Added it directly to the intake from the vacum lines. Did two treatments the first time I did it and the misfires stopped and the CE light shut off. Treat it every 3,000 or so, but I think it is just a band aid for the inevitable (valve job). As Randal mention the additives typically just treat the intake valves. But for some reason when you load the engine through the intake vacum lines the seafoam does not all burn up in the combustion chamber. The fact that it would leak out of the exhaust manifold is evidence of that. Its worth a try, besides its only $5 a can vs. $2,500 for a valve job.

Chris,
Check out www.robisonservice.com under the service section. Look in Buying a used Landrover. In the Discovery section there are PDF files on Carbon Buildup.

I am not much of an additive guy but I put Lucas fuel treatment in and idle misfire disappeared and mileage improved after 2 tanks. I let the engine inhale some water through a small vacuum line at each oil change to clean the carbon off the exhaust valves. I think it works since I have pulled the exhaust manifolds and they have NO carbon in them afterwards.

Anyone have a step by step for dummies on how to add any of this Seafoam to vaccum lines with breaking something important? I'm the guy who'd be looking for the "Dirt Devil" or "Hoover" under the hood. Maybe not that bad but the thought of adding something to the wrong line gives me cause for pause. Thanks to all for the good info. You all make it worth while to keep my pig....Almost.

I know a guy who owns a Rover shop. His trick is to remove the cats, then spray water down the intake pipes. Carbon all gone, engine runs real nice.

I get it from European Motor Werks. $6.95 can. A German product for the European cars.
