What I have first learned is to check your brake-pedal arm. Attached to the arm you will see a plastic plunger. When this goes south, it will not allow you to shift out of Park. Essentially a safety mechanism. I bet if you look at your brake lights, they will not be functioning either. They call it a Stop Light Switch. Good Luck.

Thanks Bruce. The brake lights are working OK. The plastic plunger is hanging off but I thought it was for the cruise control . have a spare will try. Thanks. |

The other thing to check is the circlip on the top of the shaft inside of the gear change lever. If the thumb button feels different or really spongy, it may have popped off. To check it. Prise off the top cap on the shifter lever itself (right under where your palm rests) You should be able to see the top of the shaft and where the circlip should be... Kevin Hans 96 D1 5spd |

Get down close to the console and push on the brakes. You should hear a clicking noise. This is the safety lock-out actuator moving in and out. This will tell you if it is the shifter out of wack or a switch gone bad. usually, if it's not the brake switch, you can check some of the switches inside the shift assembly. Inside the shift assembly there is a roller microswitch that sometimes gets it's arm bent out of place. What this microswitch does is tell the safety lock out actuator that you are not in a drive gear and to open up. You will need to do a little dissassembly of the console to do this, but it's not as hard as you might think. That has been the problem on mine and a couple of others here on the board. Hey Thanks for the info' Mike. Chaps, Thanks for the help. situation has been rectified. The brake switch-lockout was the problem. The switch did not appear to have either a good seat on the pedal arm or the cables/contacts were loose. Vehicle safely home away from the dangerous! Mall and the even more so dangerous wife... Thanks all, for the help. |
