Looking into replacing the rear wheel hub on my 2000 D2. The service manual makes it pretty clear, except for how much force is required to press the half-shaft from the hub. Could the puller I use to remove rusty brake disks do the job?

Sorry, yes, my question is regarding pressing out the axle (half shaft) from the hub body. Would a screw-type puller like above have enough force to do the job, or is a hydraulic press required? |

You'll need a hydraulic press...the easiest thing to do is pull the hub and axle and take it a shop... Frank |

Frank - do you need a press to get it back together again? Also is 20 ton good - I'm considering buying one. |

Dean, the workshop manual does not mention using a press to get it back in, only out. It implies that bolting the hub back onto the axle does the job. |

I had mine done at a driveline shop...just easier to have them press the old axles out and install the new ones. The problem is that you need to tighten the axle nut to 360lbs.ft...Dean, it should, just have to be careful that you fuck up the hub... Frank |

When I pressed mine off, they slid back in for reassembly. Very odd. I replaced a hub this weekend, and the old one slid off (I removed the nut and tapped the end of the shaft with a hammer to break it free), and the new hub slid onto the shaft. |

Hmmmm... So maybe it's worth trying, assuming a backup shop is available with a press. Why did you replace yours Greg? ABS system? |

No, leaking hub. For what it's worth, the sensors are removable from the hubs. A small hex head screw is all that holds them in. I removed mine from the bad hub, replaced with another hub, the reinstalled my old sensor. All is good now. From start to finsih was less than 45 min. |

Well, I neither have the press, nor a torque wrench that can do 350 ft/lb, so rather than buy a cheap high-torque wrench, and maybe have a hammer/puller work to get the shaft out, I'll have my trusty shop do it, but I'll keep the old hub for 'just in case' field repairs. |

I couldn't get mine off, but I didn't want to destroy my hubs either...That's interesting, you would think that you would need to press the axle's back into the hubs. Greg, were those the orginal hubs and axle's? I wonder if they used a super locktite at the factory...I need to change one of mine, broken lug, maybe i'll give it a go today, if it ever stops snowing... Frank

Frank, I had to press of the factory axles, then the hubs slid onto the GBR axles. However, when I replaced them, one of the hubs slid off of the factory axlem, and, the spare slid off of a factory axle also. I did have one hub replaced under warranty, so maybe it was the loose one. |
