Anybody using a 5-speed on their D1? I am interested and looking for feedback. Any horror stories? The Disco I'm looking at has a "newer" 5-speed, as the owner fried the original. Dealer replaced with new.

I've only heard of synchro problems. Anything else to look for? Any feedback would be appreciated.

You referring to a "manual gearbox? " ??

They are very common outside of the US. I have one coupled up to a turbo diesel on my Disco.

Suggest you go over to the UK Landrover Enthusiast forums, go to Discovery Forum and do a search there for " manual gearbox". Lots of info on there.

Boris, I have a 96 NAS Discovery with the 5spd gearbox. I actually looked for one because I wanted something a little different and more challenging. I really do enjoy it. It has 112k on it and I believe still the original clutch. Get used to getting knocked around though, because you will get a lot of drive line lash even when you get really smooth with it. The second gear synchro is a little rough in mine, but not bad. There is also a synchro for reverse for those inevitable failed hill climbs!

One of the nice advantages of the manual is that when you get smooth you can actually shift from low to high on the fly without any drama.....helps with towing, being stuck in traffic, or making a hasty getaway at the trailhead! The other nice thing is that there is no gear interlock like the automatic....so you never have to worry about your brakelight switch keeping you from forward motion!

The one problem that I am experiencing is the the speed of low range. As soon as you go o a bigger size, even first gear low seems pretty fast. You can brake pretty hard and not stall it, but still, lower gearing seems to be in order. You could probably get a lot of good feedback from the defender crowd too. Hope this helps.

I've got a 94 with the 5 speed and 144k and its fine, the same remarks Kevin had WRT drive line lash apply, so that is likely the norm. My synchro's are getting rough as well, I am hoping it can stay alive for awhile.

Another advantage of the 5 speed is what you'd expect, its faster off the line and you have more control over the engine, so despite the fact that its a pig in the wind you can make it move faster relative to an auto.

Kevin's last point is totally true, a lot of times even in low it feels like its flying, so re-gearing is probably a good idea.

D1 manuals esp early up to about 96 had output spline problems, ie no lube and splines would chew out.
LR had a sort of fix with a oil thrower ring and later a drilled gear.
Suggest you remove PTO cover on rear of box and check for metal crud around gear spline.
It is also suggested by AB (or one ) to fill transfer with about 1/2pint I think more oil to give extra splash lube.

I own a 1995 Discovery # 1 5 speed with 50,000 miles on her ...I have had no problems with my 5 speed "knock on wood "... but it does like to "leak a little oil "etc...but they all do from time to time... I have heard from other Discovery 5 spd owners in the field etc.." .mechanic checked for metal on drain plug and found little or none told me I hade no problem with upper gear lubrication etc....some have problems but not sure which ones years etc...one important thing is you must make sure trans fluid is topped up at all times I really mean that or you could and will run into problems down the road....hope this helps...

I have a 96 disco and the 5 speed just went out... I have a chewing sound comming out of it, it wont go into any bottom gears (2nd,4th,or Rev.) All of what you have been told is true about the fluid level needing to be topped at all times, I am proof of that.. I have a wanted add posted if anyone has Trans and T-Case they want to get rid of.... Good luck!

Depends on how it's driven and depends on what version R380 you have. Unfortunately, my wife drove my '95 like a Lamborghini (speed shifting every gear, etc), so when I put in a 4.6 I soon started having problems with 2nd & 3rd synchros.

The R380 "J" boxes in the 94-95 V8 Discos (and maybe later models) have some durability problems. The later "K" boxes supposedly fixed that lubrication problem. The "L" boxes are a different size and are mated to the diesel motor. Ashcroft R380s (new and rebuilt) are supposed to be big improvements over the factory "J" boxes.

I have 30K miles on a rebuilt Ashcroft R380 behind a 4.6 with no problems so far. I also use Redline MTL synthetic fluid, which is supposed to be the best for these boxes.
