Martin, you should only tow the vehicle on a car hauler. In emergencies you can put both shifters into neutral, but you can not do that for extended periods of time.

Your owners manual will strongly recomend all four wheels to be off the ground for any real distance. I.e. a trailer or flatbed truck.

Besides the shifter option, which has been mentioned. The only other option would be to disconect your drivesahfts and secure them up and out of the way. Hope you feel good about your knots! So this is still a band-aide fix really.

BTW a Disco is a pretty dang heavy dingy to be dragging around!

I met a guy in wyoming who was flat towing a series II behind his motorhome. He said he has had it back there for over 30,000 miles!?! I was under the impression that you shouldnt be doing that, but we hit some trails and everything seemed fine. Just an observation.

Martin,

I just saw a really cool set up on a retired couples motorhome. They tow a full size late model jeep all over the US. I was told that the aftermarket company that makes it has them for all vehicles, including the Discovery.

It was extremely heavy duty. The bulk of it kind of resembled a combination of a rock slider and a recovery yoke. I was told that the aftermarket company that makes it has them for all vehicles, including the Discovery.

Now I'm wishing that I had taken note of the after-market company that made it. I think you could find out from Jeep - because they had purchased it directly from the Jeep dealership even though it was labeled with the name of the after-market manufacturer.

Good Luck, Jamie

thanks all
i am doing this for a client that is looking into purchasing a 03 disco and they want to tow it behind their motorhome. I am familiar with not towing it on the ground, but they insist they want to do it this way. I was just looking to see if anyone here as done this.

Be very careful. My owners manual states to keep the transmission in Park when towing, and I've read in other discussions that you may damage the transmision if you do not.

The procedure in my 2000 D2 manual for towing behind a motorhome is:

1. Apply the handbrake
2. Turn the starter to position 2
3. Put the transmission in neutral
4. Put the transfer case in neutral
5. Put the transmission in park
6. If it is necessary to operate the brake lights or direction indicators, turn the starter switch to position 1, to ensure the steering is unlocked.
7. Secure to towing vehicle
8. Release hand brake
