I'd like to wash the dirt, mud and sand off my 95 Disco 3.9 engine and was wondering if there is any "best" way to do it. I assume I should cover the distributor cap and plug wires with a plastic bag. Are there any other components that should be covered or avoid getting wet?

Um - the ECU!

I'd just leave it. Wipe down the black plastic with an oily cloth and it will look brand new(ish).

I’m going to have to temp fate. I like to keep my entire vehicle clean including the engine.

Surely if my Toyota Land Cruisers’ engine can withstand the car wash, my Discovery should have no problem also? After all, we’re driving the best 4x4xfar. A little water on the engine shouldn’t be a concern.

I’ll post the outcome either way.

Careful,

Crushers are sublect to fouled TPS sensors if you press wash around the TB. Spray it w/simple green when it's cool then hose it off. If it's half the 4x4 they claim it is it should be ok.

I sprayed the engine off at the car wash this evening and had no problems. I covered the distributor with a plastic bag and was very careful around the sensors. Ahhhh...a nice clean engine. At least until the next trail run.

I don't own a DI but it will be on the throttle body opposite the linkage where the throttle cable attaches.

Brett,

I always spray off my engine. I soak it with the engine cleaner, then wash the rest of the car, and finally, I spray off the engine. I'm on rinse by the time I hit the engine. I stay clear of electronics and sensors as much as possible.

I realize there's a luck factor in there, but so far, after many washings, I've never had a problem.

Of course, I do have oil leaks now that never used to make it to the ground!

Kenny
