I am working on a friend of mine's Discovery. It will turn over just fine, but it's not getting fire. When trying to crank it the service engine light comes on, along with the low fuel light. The fuel filter and the coil were both replaced about a month ago, along with plugs and wires. I am thinking that maybe there is something wrong with the fuel system since the low fuel light is coming on while cranking. Also I have gone through and checked the plugs, wires, and coil to see if anything was loose. I then tried to crank it, and I got the same thing. I am about to go get my voltage meter out of my Rover and test the coil. Anybody have any ideas? By the way, Do '94's have an LCD readout? And where would it be?

Thanks a bunch,
Will

They do have LCD readout, under passenger seat. Nothing will read there though, unless the check engine light is on. Not sure on the no-start. My buddy's 94 Defender has same issue at times, but only happens when it is both cold and wet, so please report back if you discover the issue.

Check for spark first. In my experience, most no-starts *seem* like fuel but are often ignition.

If you are getting solid spark, which is easy to check, then start looking at the fuel system.

A simple fuel check is to listen for the fuel pump in the rear cargo area just after turning the key. You should hear a definite pump whine for a few seconds as the fuel pressure comes up.

Check the coil again, I had the same problem with mine about a year ago, car would turn but it would not start. Changed the coil and it started right up!!!!

A few months ago I got tired of the crappy ignitor and coil wiring on our '94 and replaced it all with high quality silicon jacketed wire. I removed all of the plugs and soldered any connections direct...I even soldered the connectors to the ignitor, doing away with the plug. Doing this solved a random stalling and starting problem that would pop up every now and then.

IMO the OEM wires are just good enough when in good shape, but once they corrode and the plugs wear, it can get ugly.

Well I got it to start running again. I took off the distributor side of the wire from the coil to the distributor, and held it up close to the block, and I got a guy to crank it, and it shot sparks out. I then reattached it to the distributor cap, and he tried to crank it again, and it fired right up. He turned it on and off a few time to see if it would crank again, and it seemed to work. Earlier I had gone through and pressed down the top of it, but that still did not do anything, but I guess reseating it did something. Thanks for the help fellas!!!

I had an odd thing happen last night with my '96

I was starting to turn it over and hit the drivers door lock at the same time. Wouldn't start at all, just kept turning over. Was like that for a few minutes.

Then I cycled the door locks off the remote, locked then unlocked. The thing started right up. I figure it must be some security feature.

My '95 did the same thing a while back -- wasn't getting any spark. It turned out to be a malfunction in the security system wasn't allowing any spark. The quick fix is to turn the alarm on and off several times in rapid succession, either with the key fob or the driver's door lock. The long term solution is to reprogram the alarm system.
