Greetings: Any help on a cruise control.
Working fine; then not working at all. Nothing changed in weather or driving.
1997 Discovery 123000 miles
No fuse problem; and does not seem to have any elecrical problems other than this one.
Thanks

Check your vacuum lines. The cruise control has a little vacuum pump that runs the system behind the left front headlight.

I'm having problems w/ the cruise on my DII, It suffered from a cracked hose & was completely dead. Replaced the hose & it came to life but, it will not hold a steady speed. If you set it for say 70mph, it will coast unill it drops ~ 1/2-1 mph then it will accelerate to about 70-71 mph & coast again. Very irritating, any suggestions?

Thanks
Bob

what type of hose did you replace it with. Some are too flexable and collapes when the vaccum is applied.

It's a standard vacuum hose, I don't think it's collaping, what would you recommend?

Bob - Sounds like you still have a leak. Check the diaphram....or it's your VSS.

Bob,

I have an '03 Disco and it does that same thing. However, after about 20 seconds it levels out and holds a steady speed. Come to think of it, I haven't noticed the problem anymore. Maybe I'm getting used to it, or maybe it's gone away.

My '01 D2 does that, but I've always just assumed that's they way it works to begin with, it is a LR after all. I rarely use cruise control so I haven't bothered with looking for a problem.

I had the surging problem on my '03. The dealer reprogramed something in the computer and made it better. Now it only surges for 2-3 seconds and then calms down.

How do you test the vacume on the pump. I still cant get my cruise to work.
I hot wired the pump which worked but I have no idea if it is still strong enough. I have changed all the hoses and get the relay sound from the front pass side of car when I turn it on.

When does that vacume pump come on?? When engine is running or at a certain speed ??

I am now wondering about the hose I replaced it with if it is strong enough as well.

I replaced my vacuum hose with the standard lines for windshield washer fluid (Auto Zone ~$8) and it's been great. Only time it stops working is when I discover another crack in the old/original hose.

Any my car also loses power about 5mph on hills, even at highway speed...but I do live in a pretty steep area and it's worse in the summer with the A/C on...really pulls on the engine.

Good luck.

Joseph,

Checked the diaphram w/ a MityVac. It holds, I'm assuming VSS is the vehicle speed sensor. As newbie owner who is sill manualess, where is it & how much of a PITA is it to replace?

P.S. Wouldn't I get some other indications of failure, bad speedo, check engine light ect?
