Dweb is full of folks that love the outdoors (of course). I myself have been hunting mule deer and antelope in NV my whole life. We have several shoulder mounts in our house. I have harvested a few mulies so far (the biggest was 29" spread) and one antelope. I harvested my first antelope 2 years ago, and now we have 3 antelope mounts (2 shoulder, 1 horn). We also have 3 bull elk mounts and 2 mule deer shoulder mounts. Bird hunting takes up a lot of our time too. We hunt chuckar, quail, sage hen, and dove.

My brother, father, and I go fishing for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, kokanee salmon, large/small mouth bass, etc... I personally love to go fly fishing, and I also tie my own flies. Some of the cutthroats we have caught have been up to 7 lbs using fly rods.

So I would like to know who here likes hunting/fishing, and what type of game/fish have you harvested? Possibly some pics of trophies? Any fly tyers?

I have hunted since I was a kid . I have taken dozens of deer and 4 Bear and 3 turkey all with a bow.

As my name says I am also a die hard musky hunter having taken hundreds and 99% have all been released. My favorite way to catch musky(but far from the most effective) is on fly tackle. I tie all my own flys no matter if I am walking the flats for salt water species or drifting for stealhead. fly fishing without tying is like owning a rover and going to a dealer:-)

I cannot remember a time when I did not fish. I started hunting as a teen.

I like the satisfaction of catching a fish on a fly that I tied myself.

One of my favorite fish to catch has to be the kokanee salmon. There was one trip that I remember at Stampede (a little west of Reno). There was a fishing derby that had a prize package that was worth about $2000 including an electric downrigger. We didn't enter that day though. During the day I caught a 16 3/4" kokanee. When we came back to the dock we found out the winning fish was a little under 16", but it was too bad for us because we didn't enter.

I'd love to go on an elk hunt. I've never been on one because my dad won't let me miss school, and I'm really busy with sports. I understand though, school comes first...
I'd say a moose hunt would be pretty exciting too. It's amazing how big and powerful a moose can get. Or maybe it's because I'm use to seeing 130 lb pronghorn antelope. :-)

"I have hunted since I was a kid . I have taken dozens of deer and 4 Bear and 3 turkey all with a bow."

I've been shooting a bow since I could pull one back. I still enjoy walking behind my house in the desert shooting ant hills with a set of old arrows. It helps a lot with estimating yardage too.

Dweb hunting/wheeling video... sounds good to me.

I'll let my profile speak for itself.

However, I do spend the majority of my hunting time chasing birds with my lab.

That is awesome!

Damn Funny.

Fished all of my life. Grew up in Washington State lure fishing for trout in the Cowlitz River. At one time I lived 300 yards from the Chehalis river. Used to walk down to the river after school and fish. Pulled a 20lb King Salmon out of the Chehalis River, then smoked it. Damn I still remember how good it was.....

Did lots of off-shore fishing in the Pacific and even went on a Halibut / Salmon fishing trip in Alaska. IMO, Alaska is the Holy Grail of fishing. Now I live in NC and we cruise out about 11 miles to catch the Gulf Stream current. Not as exciting as fishing in the west, but it's still outdoor fun.

I hunt and fish as well. Have fished a few places in Alaska ( Little Susitna, Eagle River, Kenai ). I've done 2 of those drop in fishing trips for extended weekends up in Alaska which are fun if you get a good group of friends. I go up to Canada every year to fish for Bass and Pike as well. My father, myself, and a few others are working out a hunting trip for Brown Bear next fall in Alaska. We might also go up for some moose. I'm not too sure I can shoot a brown bear though. I'm getting soft in my old age. Moose, no problem. They are like rats in Alaska. Around here though it's just ducks, dear, pheasent, and quail. I like hunting deer up in upstate NY better then around here though. Much bigger game and just all around nicer mountains. Lately though it's just been fishing. I haven't gone hunting in at least 2 years. I've only gone deep see fishing twice though and would love to get out and do that again. Fly fishing for Tarpon in the FL Keys would be a nice trip as well. I never have learned how to fly fish though. I'll have learn that one day. Maybe this year since I have plenty of time on my hands to practice casting and working the line. Hmmmm, what are some good choices for fly rods and reels for a beginner?

I fish trout and jack mostly, mostly spinning but got a fly rod recently so need to learn how to use it. Done some skeet shooting but never hunted before.

.223 is a great varmit gun.

What's fun is sneaking up on a bunch of hogs and waiting for two to line up...280 Rem Wildcat (280 necked up to perform = to 7 mm Mag but w/ 10 grains less powder). Good stuff!

I grew up in West Texas, so spin-fishing for bass, stripers, wipers, crappie and catfish were the norm. My mom would bring the Fry-Daddy on the boat and have the bread mix all ready to go. Nothin' like fresh catfish fried just moments after being caught. YUM!

Last year after I quit my job, my husband bought me a St. Croix fly rod set-up. I spent all of last summer and fall fly fishing, and boy does the rover come in handy for getting there, too. I actually had 2 get away in one day (no, really!). One was at Long Draw Res, a beautiful brown, probably 10 inches or so. I had him reeled in and was fussing to get my camera out for proof when he managed to wiggle the hook out of his mouth. I'll be getting a net this season. Second one was on the Poudre River. Not sure how big(or little) he was but hopefully the hopper fell out if his mouth by now. I made the mistake of not keeping the rod high when I was reeling him in. He went around some rocks and the line snapped. Doh!

I must say, I am completely 'hooked'. Some of you might remember when my dog Moab passed away. In the weeks prior to his death, we went camping/fishing around the upper Frying Pan area and I caught 11 fish in one day. Most were small brookies, but the look on his face when I caught the first one was hilarious, as he was new to fishing, too. Needless to say, he was my good luck charm.

My husband likes to hunt elk/deer. Didn't have any luck this season, but we are still finishing off the meat from last year, so all is good.

Phillip,

pointing Labs started to become popular for upland birds not too long ago. first article I saw was about 7 years ago. my uncle in Washington hunts with one. as steady as a pointer like a German Shorthair, yet, alot more calm. one thing to consider is Labs ahve a tendency to gain weight, so you they need to be in really good shape if you're going to use running all day.

personally I don't like the idea, yet, it seems to be catching on.

this is what they should be doing:

I hunt pheasant here in CT, not a lot of land to hunt in this state. I also shoot a lot at the range. I love the bigger firearms, I have a Sako 7mm Rem Mag, Marlin 1895 Cowboy 45-70 Gov, and a Browning Bar 30-06 Springfield. I also shoot a CZ 527 American .22 Hornet as well and I love that rifle, never heard of the name either and its accurate as hell. I wish to go big game hunting some day.

I moved back to Arizona with my lab. There are little opportunities for ducks. Now and then you can get lucky and jump a cattle tank. She works great during dove season around the tanks, when the dove drop in the middle.

Just for excersize I began to take her out while I was out for quail. Second year she starts on a point (weak, but she knew). She has become a good flusher without me working a whole lot with her.

As she gets older I know the time is going to be at hand. I have debated with myself, and read all the pro con stuff out there, Shorthair V. Pointing Lab. Each is a great dog, I just love the Labs. This is my next Gun Dog.

Grew up hunting for Whitetail, quail, dove, duck, rabbit, coyote, pheasant and whatever else we could find as kids. Now I spend a week a year during black powder season camping/hunting with my Dad on our Deer lease. I could care less if I kill anything anymore...that just means more work.

There is no wilder feeling than busting a covey of quail in the dark by walking in the middle of them while heading to the tree stand. No sex, drug, or thrill ride will have your heart beating faster. Although busting a covey while smoking meth, having sex and going mach three might be a rush;) Minus the meth of course...

Also grew up large mouth bass fishing and some striped bass fishing. Primarily use a Bow now to hunt Deer and some duck hunting although my lab is 9 years old and it hurts to go without him. Took my first dear 20 years ago last fall. Been bear hunting and antelope in New Mexico.

I want to get involved with fly fishing as my childhood hunting partner now lives in Idaho and is part time guiding.

Any advice on good starter rods etc... I will primarily fish for trout here in Oklahoma and Arkansas with hopefully a trip next year to Idaho.

I dont get flyfishing for trout and other small fish. After catching marlin and big tuna, trout doesnt appeal to me. as far as rods go, i use chaos rods. www.chaosrods.com they work great and you can get your boats name written on them.

"I dont get flyfishing for trout and other small fish. After catching marlin and big tuna, trout doesnt appeal to me."

I can understand that. Some of the 12-13" trout that I have caught seem to put up a better fight than 20"+ fish. The smaller guys have more "spunk" to them so they put up a better fight. Atleast thats what I've noticed on the Truckee river that runs from Tahoe to Pyramid. My brother and I would catch a combined total of 70+ fish in one day on the Truckee. We would use an ultralight pole, with a small split-shot wieght, and a single salmon egg on a #12 hook. Find a good spot and you would get a bite almost every cast.

Bears, and Caribou - chased lots of moose - and killed a few spruce with the .375

As for Fishing it's got to be Salmon, Ocean run, or mooching - any kind. But I'll only eat Kings. and the Holy Halibut.

Yes I dearly miss living in Alaska. Here in SC they have hordes of deer the size of German Shepherds...

dosent sound like much sport in that?

with the delayed mortality of single hook live bait rigs you can do real damage to a fishery. thats why guys fly fish. it gives the fish a sporting chance.

although the first time you hook a bonefish you will see that it isnt always fair:-)

Thom,

The hooks we used were always barbless, so they were easier to remove. We also drove from place to place during they day, so we never stayed in one spot for a long period of time. We were very gentle with the fish, since we were just catching and releasing.

I never thought of it like that though. My brother and I were just two young guys having fun catching loads of fish.:-)

I'll take that into consideration this summer (if I even have the time to go...).

Matt

wasent trying to give you a hard time, the reason I brought it up is because trout can be hammered pretty easy with bait methods. Using barbless helps but still there is a very large delayed mortality due to the fact that when they taste bait they swallow it as aposed to holding a artificial offering. thats why many of the states have "artificial lures only" regulations on trout water.

and I'm not exempt...my parents have pictures of my brother and I with stringers of little smallmouth bass....killing them when they are little isnt good for the fishery either. but that was the early 70's and nobody released fish.

Chukkars, Hungarians, Pheasant, and quail when the other are slow which is rare. I fish walleye, Bass, Kokane, perch, steelhead, Salmon, and trout. I used to fly fish in college but I've only done it twice since moving to Eastern Washington and I bought a boat and gained a family so most of the time spent is with them. I deer hunt in ohio every season since I got out of the army but Washington deer taste like crap so I don't bother anymore.
