I want to install a pair of lights on my DII factory brush bar and am looking for advice on what to buy; Hella, IPF, etc. and 500/1000/4000s etc.

Also, after looking at the wiring instructions on the tech section, any input on the difficulty in wiring to the factory switch would be appreciated. What will I need to buy? Probably not as bad as I think but seems a bit confusing with my limited electrical background.

the make of head light is similar to the ford vs. chevy.... almost identical products but people have major alliances with them. Depending on what use you want them for, driving, spot, pin, flood, they all offer good products. I have actually purchases Hella & IPF for my truck. Do some more reseach on board & you'll be sure to find lots of information. Also these lights (most of them) come with pretty detailed wiring kits and diagrams & will make the install pretty easy. If you want to start to use some of the aux switches on the truck wiring will be a little more difficult but nothing that would be overwhelming. Wiring 2 new lights would probably be a very good 1/2 day exercise for the novice..

Good luck.

I have two Hella 3000s on my brush bar. They work great and only took about 1-1/2 hours to install. I was originally going to use a factory switch, but the Hella switch is fine, so I just used that and attached it to the little removable plastic piece to the left of the steering wheel. I broke a small hole through the firwall grommet to run the wires than patched it up w/ tape and silicone.

Wiring the factory switch is no problem BUT the switch needs to be modified to work.
First off you need a maintained switch such as the cruise control switch. Then to get the lable right you can get a fog light switch. The legend plate comes off.
Inside the switch body is a printed circuit board and two leds, one for illumination and one as an indicator. One of the traces need to be cut on the board and a jumper needs to be run between two of the pins to make the indicator led to work.
I didn't really keep track of what I did but if you are really interested in using a factory switch e-mail me and I'll get you more information.

Thanks for the responses.

My original thought was to wire directly to the existing fog lamp switch as indicated in the tech section, but after further thought it may be easier to use the existing Hella switch and locate to the left of the steering wheel like mentioned above. Using factory switch would be nice, but not critical. Would be a good idea if LR would sell a blank switch to install into one of the empty sockets that could be used for aftermarket accessories.

Are the 3000s that much better than the 1,000s?

Steve. This is what you need for your lights.

just switch the button tops and you've got a blank switch.

steve,
call nathan at discount rovers (.com); he can find you all sorts of switch and holder options that will maintain factory appearance. wiring just takes time to learn; 12v automotive systems are pretty straightforward.
good luck.

The switch shown in the tech section is for a D1. Unfortunately the switch for the D2 is different and that wiring diagram doesn't quite work.
When I get a chance I will put a procedure in the tech section.

Steve,

I put 2 Hella 4000 cornering beams on my front bumper at the suggestion of John Lee at Expedition Exchange. He also carries all the relays needed for install.

They have worked well and made tasks more convenient since install. I really didn't know what awesome lights they were until last week.

I wish I could show you the assistance those lights provided one night last week. They threw off light a few hundred feet on both sides of my truck. We really NEEDED them for what we were doing and they kicked butt.

My experience with them last week more than paid for every single dollar I spent on them. I was so shocked by their performance that I wrote John Lee and thanked him for his recommendation.

Whatever you choose to put up front, I highly recommend getting clear plastic covers for them. They can stay on the lights all the time.

Good Luck, Jamie

Thanks for the info.

I figured LR would sell me the switch, but wasn't sure I could make it work. I will follow-up with Discount Rovers and Expedition Exchange for the lights and switches.
