When I try to open either sunroof, they both only budge about a half inch. But if I simultaneously push up on the sunroof as soon as I push the button, the sunroof goes over the lip and retracts just fine. Any suggestions on what the problem might be.

The tracks are bent. This is a very common problem on all DI's. I have a 95 and they were replaced 3 times under warranty. After that, I just left it. It is very expensive and or time consuming and a pain in the ass if you want to do it yourself. You would have to remove the headliner to access the tracks. Forget that...I don't have time for that.
Good luck!

You can always replace with an aftermarket sun roof, then you don't have to worry as much....at least if you get some manual ones.
