ok, this is getting out of hand. when i need to get a silly air filter i have to go to the dealer.. why?!? because canadian tire doesn't carry the size, NAPA is special order and take about 1 week or so... and the parts counter at the dealership closes at 5 and they don't open on the weekend. When i asked the dealership why they're not open on the weekends as most people fix their cars on the weekend, answer was... there's only a hand full of land rover owners that are willing to work on their cars so we don't see the point.. with that said.. where can i get parts when i need them without waiting 1 week or so!??!?!
much appreciated
sam

Here, Advance Auto is open 'til 9pm, and will have a part for you before they open the next day. I wouldn't hold my breath when looking for something like a Rover engine block with them, but they carry Purolator filters for Rovers, not a big deal at all....

I don't know if there's one in Toronto or not, tho'.....

Good luck,

-Leslie

Sam:

Give these guys a shout (http://www.discotech4x4.com/). They are over in Brampton off the 407. Not sure if they carry bits as they are mostly a mod shop, but might be worth a call.

Me, I got a K&N (so no air filters for me) and I usually try and plan a bit and get all my parts in the US from mail-order when I go down that way on business. The hotels always seem a bit amazed when the UPS guy shows up.

Being up here in North Bay I'd be pretty screwed for parts even though a bit of creativity can get some things from the local suppliers.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I'm surprised about NAPA. The ones I have dealt with here in Ottawa have been quite efficient, and had parts in much sooner than a week, typically next day! But you are correct, CT is not going to cut it for you! Canadian Tire could not even give me a listing for a thermostat for a Disco I.

Dealership here is in same vein as your experience, most owners do not do D-I-Y on the non-Series vehicles...

What about some of the parts places that support MG & Triumph parts? Places that come to mind are Peninsula Imports, British Auto Sport (BAS), and Obsolete Automotive (in Sarnia). I know they deal in those older British cars, but maybe they have some Land Rover interests too...

I'm just east of T.O.. discotech4x4.com is excellent...Gilles and Donna are real helpful..

You can get an air filter from Car Quest I know there is one in Markham $30.62 CDN. For Spark Plugs - Champion RN11YCY (3.9 V8) You can get those at Wall-Mart as well as Oil Filter and Fuel Filter (fram) If you look in the catalog its listed under Rover (not Land Rover). Oh and you can get a Transmission filter at Car Quest as well $68.96 CDN. and if your ever interested in OME and ARB check out www.national4wd.com For other supplies try discountbritishparts.com or any of the other U.S rover gurus out there..

Other then that were screwed up here!! I'm still looking for a Magnicore wire dealer and finding other sets of wires that will fit (I've heard something about late 70's Crysler V8 wires??)

bill, mabe you can be the middle man for us lonely canadians that has to pay an arm and a leg for parts to be shipped up here... :-)
as for discotech... heard great things about it but the biggest problem is their hours and location ... i live downtown toronto and work downtown toronto so for me to go up to brampton at about 7, take the go train back into town to make it for work at 8... then will have to leave early to make it back up to brampton... and this doesn't include traffic... but thanks for all your help..
take care
sam
by the way.. if anyone needs or wants a copy of a rave cd, let me know

Bill- North Bay!! I have a cottage on Gowganda Lake.. Love those old mining and loggin roads! Now those are some ol trail systems...!!! Definately Rover country.

Sam- If you talk to the folks at www.discountbritishparts.com (or other rover gurus) they might package and label their shipments in such a way that the customs charges are much less.. Thats what'll cost you the shipping isn't much and often still less then buying up here.

Carquest is your best bet then Napa for the air filter.. Other then that let us know if you locate elsewhere..and I might need to grab a cd off you..

Sam,

Gilles and Donna at Discotech are great, but I feel your pain. I live at Yonge and Lawrence and work right downtown. Brampton is a bit far for regular maintainance, and parts are tough to find unless I go to Land Rover Toronto on Mt Pleasant north of Eglinton.

If you know specifically what you want (oil filter, fuel filter) LRTO isn't bad, but to get work done they are way too expensive, like any dealer.

Canadian Tire can actually get quite a bit. If you know the part number and manufacturer thay can get it fairly quickly. Like any auto parts place, if you get the wrong guy at the counter he won't look past the computer.

CT carry K&N Filters and they can usually get the part in a day or two. I walked in with my old filter in hand. The guy at the counter just picked up the K&N book when he couldn't find it on the computer, and found it in no time.

You really should join one of the LR owner clubs (a.k.a. Support Groups) in Toronto. The Land Rover Adventure Association (http://www.landroveradventure.com)is having a meeting next Tuesday and is focused mostly on off-road stuff. The Toronto Area Rover Club (http://www.roverclub.org/) is more general in nature and includes Rover automobiles too.

Both clubs are loaded with driveway mechanics that can connect you with tons of sources for parts.

Hope this helped.

Victor

Guys:

Just as another suggestion, I use those cross-reference sheets that are out here on the Net quite a bit. As an example, I got all the belts for my RRC at CT by just knowing which Gates belt number I needed instead of going up to buddy at the counter. Did the same for U-joints. You can't get everything by any means, but most "consummables" are out there.

Phil - I've gotten out a bit but mostly on the tracks that cottagers use so they are not real ugly. Since I live about a half mile off the road on a private track that I share with 4 other houses, I usually have a bit of "adventure" everyday, at least in the winter. Many a time I have had to slog it out of here in the morning just to get to work.

Guys:

Damn, just had another thought (slow this AM - too early and too friggin' cold).

When you consider the price of stuff from TO dealers or folks like AB or RN, then add on that horrendous brokage and shipping fees; another thing I've done is to order from XK Unlimited in Calif (http://www.xkslandrover.com/). Their prices are so good that even with the brokerage you are still saving a tonne. As an example, I needed a tie rod end in kind of an emergency level. Went to one of the local places here in North Bay, they got the part (Eseldorfer or whatever it is) in a couple of days and it cost me $80CDN. I then figured out that I needed the rest of the ends but not immediately. Ordered three more from XK Unlimited at like $10USD each and even by the time they got up here (in three days - and this has been the usual case for time to delivery) I was still well under the local price for one. Alot of their bits are either "Genuine", come from the OEM suppliers, or are in Allmakes or similar packaging. I know there are folks out there who cry about getting "Genuine" all the time; but after 3 Rovers and living in the relative middle of nowhere most of the time wih them, I've never had one bit of trouble with any of the "cheap" parts I've purchased from XK.

Any road, just a suggestion.
