Wonder what the pros and cons are of installing wheel spacers as opposed to buying a new set of steel rims with a different offset, other than spacers are expensive as hell.

I already got the stock alloy 16" rims w/street tires and a set of Swamper 10/32-16LT on some 16" steel rims. Was thinking about going to 15" rims 'cause tires are cheaper.

Serious thoughts welcomed. If you can't talk nice, then don't talk at all.

Jay, I have steel rims with something like +0.5" offset. They drive me nuts, because the tires as narrow as 245 rub on rear quarter lips. If your steel rims have stock offset, I'd gladly swap them with you.

I have slightly offset steel rims and they fit and work perfectly. They give a wider stance so a lesser chance of flipping. The only problem is that they now stick out of the body, so it gets extremely dirty. Not a problem, but I don't like it when I get muddy sitting in the drivers seat.

Peter: I might be interested - any idea what the standard offset is for 16" NATO rims from AtlanticBritish? They couldn't tell me what the offset is.

Ho: Well, apart from being nauseatingly clean right now, it's not cut up...yet. I'm wanting to install some fender flares. I'm after what Jamil mentioned - wider stance, and the future possibility of going to a 33-35" tire one day (of course along with axle replacements). Also when I stuck those 32" Swampers in there, I lost some of my turning radius - I'd like to get that back too.

Jay, I believe the offset is +0.5" compared to a stock wheel.

My two cents worth: Don't use spacers!

One place you just don't want a weak link is between your wheels and your truck. Maybe I'm way off base here, but spacers and adapters are banned in most sports car enthusiast club racing events as unsafe. If they're not OK for a 2000 pound car I sure wouldn't use them on a 5000 pound one!

Peter: I wanted to get about 1.5-2" more than I have now - thanks anyways!

Mike: comparing sports cars to LR's is apples and oranges - an LR CAN'T go that fast...unless I drive off a bluff!!! One person mentioned to me that the bad thing about spacers is it's just that much more weight out there that the axle has to turn, which means more axle stress.

I'm pretty much decided to change to new rims 'cause Gulf Coast Rovers, I'm told, carries all different sorts of offset rims. Now, if I get rims with a +2 offset, other than being out of my mind, is it going to affect the steering much, camber/caster, and the way I hold my beer?

Jay, the obvious downside is that you put more stress on the wheel bearings. My other guess is that you'd have to deal with a lot more wander with 2" of positive offset. If your cupholder is broken, you'll have to live with warm beer or cold ...
