The rear end on my 97d1 is dying a slow death. The gear oil is dark in one week of driving but still translucent. After two months, the oil is dark gray with slight metallic coloring and non-translucent. I used a flashlight to peep into the fill hole but can only see the right side spider gear and the ring gear both look to be fine. I plan to pull the 3rd member in the next few weeks to get a better look at what is causing the gear oil to turn gray in short time. What Im really hoping for is that the ring and pinion will be reusable (Im happy with stock gearing) and that the carrier and spiders are the cause of the problem so that all Ill need to do is replace it with the new carrier/bearings and new axles (planning on detroit w/HD axles of some sort.) Right now the rear is working fine with no noise or clunking but Im looking to fix this before catastrophic failure leaves me stuck somewhere. Will I be able to see the cause of the problem when I pull the 3rd member or do you think this is a slow grind type of deterioration that is hard to see by eye? Ive searched in the archives, but most of the posts were regarding blown diffs that had obvious damage. Any advice and suggestions are appreciated - Mark
