Hi Everyone,

I have a 2000 DII that I just bought with 21K miles on it. It has the stock 16" wheels with the stock Wrangler 255/65/16 tires on it. I really like the look of the 18" Hurricane rims and would look to trade someone but am seeing some of the guys on this board who are actually seeking out the 16" rims. Why? Are the 16's better for off-roading or is it just a personal choice as to what a person thinks looks better? Any insight helps...Also if you have a possible trade offer let me know...

16" is much better for offroading. allows you many more tire options (read more aggressive / stronger).

If you're serious about offroading you'll want to stay away from the 18" rims. I actually have 2 sets, 18" with road tires (which handle much better on road) and 16" for off highway activities. With a floor jack and impact wrench it takes less than 20 minutes to change over.

Scott,

Like Pugsly said, it's very hard to find AT/MT tires for 18" rims. Helped a friend recently try to find tires for 17" rims and there was only a handful that he was limited to. There are lots of options for 15" and 16" rims though so it really depends on what you want to do with your truck. The big wide 18" will drive nicer on the road though so if you know that this vehicle will spend most of it's time on pavement then you might want to consider the 18s otherwise, 16s will leave you more options. You can off-road with 18s but the tires for 18s are usually lower profile so you risk damaging the rims.

285/65/18 BFG AT's are great. more sidewall then the stock tires. I havnt had a problem with them yet. Nitto also makes a 285/60/18. I havent heard anythign about them though.

Rick, do you have the 285/65/18 BFG ATs on a stock setup or have you lifted your Disco? I ran those tires on my Exploder when I still had it and really liked em. In the smaller size of course.

18's are the wrong way to go for off road. A 32" tire is 32" in diameter no matter what rim size is so the bigger the rim the less side wall you will have. Big side walls are you friend off road and you enemy on so what are you doing with your Rover is the real question. Big wheels are the fad right now but it just for looks (how good do these SUV handle anyway?).

I have 33's and handle fine. Plus it lets me go through deeper water etc. I have a 3" lift. Sidewalls are great for rocks which i havnt done yet. I havnt had a problem at 20 psi.

If Scott decides to keep his 16's I would swap someone my 16's for 18's as my 2000 D2 does not leave the road at this point.
