Has anyone out there successfully used chains on the front wheels of a disco II?

I bought the Rud-Matic chains from the dealer (Pricey!!) and they would only sell me them for the back. The book said rear only. I made an inquiry with Land Rover via their web site and the response I got was that the chains would damage the ABS hoses and crap up front. What gives?

Who would run a 4x4 without chains on all four wheels? Seems pretty stupid to me, especially for a Rover...

I just bought some a week ago at an Overland Experts event. I was acutually one of the only ones who could put them on since I have plenty of clearance and regular sized tires 265/75/16. I got Rud Grip Chains, and they work perfectly in the front and back. They did bump the plastic door sills a couple of times on the front left so make sure you dremel off the edges. If you have them on nice and tight they are nowhere near the brake lines.

Here are some pics:

Hey jamil.

Is yours a series II? Maybe yours works because you have a lift and a stock truck would end up getting too rubbed up on the front? How much lift do you have there?

Seems wierd to me. Maybe on hard turns the brake lines rub? When I get home I'll post the email comments from Land Rover. MY chains are rud too. They cost $385 CDN (about $300 US) for two in a carry bag.

Thanks!

Sheldon,
I have a D2 with a 2" lift, 265 tires, and extendes brake lines. I paid $160 for all 4 tire chains. Keep in mind that there are many types of Rud chains out there. I just have the basic easy to use "Grip" model. They worked so well I don't see the need to buy a better model. So far I only used them that one day, but I had the steering wheel at full lock in both directions and the suspension got a good flexing too.

Sheldon - LR sells their jack for $170, you can pick up an identical one in KMart for $15. Bearing this in mind, are you SURE you wanna spend $600 on snow chains from the dealership?

Too late. I already bought one set from them. I got stuck the first day with the cheesy Dunlop 255/65/16s on there. I'm used to my big Ford with 33" BFGs....

I'll order a second set of the cheaper ones. I'm going to get some for my Ford too. Last time I got stuck, I was in Saskatchewan after a bad freezing rain storm, and then a huge dump of snow. I got stuck in a drift under overcast skies. We shoveled for about 4 hours and finally walked to where our phones would work and called for help. We were so far away from any farms, had driven so long, and lost track of where we were (my buddy lives out that way and I thought he knew where we were as I live 7 hours away and don't know sit about the area). Anyway, it took 3 RCMP detachments working off our GPS coordinates to find us. They rounded up some local famres and it three trucks to get us out and up the hill as we were all spinning. It was VERY embarrassing. I'm sure I could have walked out of there after our shovel job if I had chains. Never again...

I'm going out hunting coyotes in the morning with the Rover and I have at least one set of chains dammit. Pull-outs and stuff won't do shit in the frozen ground (it's -30 outside right now) so chains and a shovel have to suffice.

I have all the basic recovery gear now. All we had were chains last time and I almost ripped the bumper off my Ford that day. I can't open my tail gate right now. Costly trip. Much more than chains. tirechains.com seems to have some good deals.

You can get a complete set (4 chains) of the RUD Grip 4x4 chains from Bill Burke for $198 US.

Jamil - Love the snow photos! Where were you guys? Also were you able to make it that hill without a winching?

Eric,
Thanks for the kind words. That was actually my favorite photo from the trip too. It was taken on the drive home. We were down in Hadlyme, CT at Overland Experts. Bruce Elfstrom runs an off-road driving training course there.

http://www.overlandexperts.com/

I learned an amazing amount of skills in those 2 days and people who I thought knew everything came away amazed with how much they learned. My 265 tires were able to do EVERY obstacle that the Rangie with 37s did. It is all about picking your line and throttle control. Yes, I made it up that hill. I had chains on AT tires too. I plan on extending my Land Rover section of my website to include driving tips and detials about my mods, so check back in the next couple months for more stuff.

Sheldon,
Calm down! Read up on this stuff...almost all the choices are personal preference. All the winches work, but each has their own best features. I went wheeling with my truck only once before I started the mods...and I got stuck really really badly.

Also...DO NOT buy anything from the dealer unless you want to get ripped off. Actually, I would not recommend the dealer to do anything to your truck unless you know for sure the mechanics are good.

Yeah I figured that out. I won't buy anything from the dealers. The tire size was so obscure, that I wasn't taking any chances. Now I will end up tossing the tires, so the chains are kind of useless since they are for a weird size. I am going to buy those chains for my Ford though, and until I get new tires (after I decide on the lift) I will have some chains for on road safety. I live in the country and commute to the city every day, usually with my two little boys in the truck (5 & 7), and getting stuck in -30 can get dangerous real quick. The money is well spent just in peace of mind alone.

If you are going anywhere you would want chains all the way round, you should be traveling with a winch or a friend that does!

If you do chain up only one end be sure that once you get to an area that has reasonable traction to remove them asap. You could damage your t/c.

Nothing wrong with only having chains in the rear. You do get a lot more traction, without risking to rip off stuff in the front, or shatter the CV joint.
