99 D2, While driving the first depression of the brake pedal has lots of travel. Then the second one is very firm and awesome brakes. I did research and decided I should bleed the brakes. I have a workshop manual and followed the procedure for bleeding the brakes with precision. I used Valvoline Synthetic brake fluid that meets DOT4 standards. Now when braking, it almost feels worse. I have more pedal travel on both first and second pumps and they don't seem to be grabbing as hard. Is this possibly related to the fluid I used? I've blead brakes many times in the past, but this is the first time on a Rover. I did visually inspect the booster line to the manifold and do not see any cracks or leaks. This is my wife and kids car so I need everything working well. TIA Troy

Is the sythetic rated DOT-5 also? If so, you will get a softer pedal, DOT-5 fluid compresses more than 3or4. Sounds like something is wrong though, i'd get it checked b4 you t-bone someone.

Luck

Troy,
Just yesterday I completely flushed my brake system for the first time in 2 years, with the same fluid: Valvoline SynPower Synthetic Formula (Exceeds DOT 3 & 4). I've been driving all day, with zero problems, and noticeably firmer feel.

Question for ya, the manual says to start with the tire that is oposite the driver in the front so in this case it would be the passenger side front, then the driver side front, then the passenger side rear and the driver side rear. I've always started with the right rear on all of my other cars. How are you guys bleeding them?

I did mine as the workshop manual suggested, for my north-american truck: FR, FL, RR, RL.

Many brakes do that Troy. Mine does the same thing, it did it when it was new and its still doing it now after 3 years. Same thing on my LS400.

Okay, It's fixed. I didn't get a good bleed the first time. I got the wife out there and gave her a work out pumping the pedal. The brakes are now firmer than ever and the initial depression is much more responsive and firmer. I chalk this one up to dorkness! :-) Thanks guys, Troy

There is also a secret warranty available from your dealer for the ABS ECU. It causes exactly this problem when it starts to go bad, particularly on those that also have the Air suspension, but happens on non air ones too.

Check it out. Mine was done last week.

Where do I check it out if it's secret? Is the information in the owner's manual?

The D2 seems to have a different bleed sequence to that of the D1's. I have a 94 & 95 Disco and there is no reference in the workshop manual for bleed sequence (unless I missed it). However in the Haynes manual it indicates that you should start at the furthest away caliper from the main fluid resevior, I.E. the rear right (left hand drive). So you start with RR, RL, FR, & FL. Is this correct sequence or is the opposite true, or does it really matter what sequence is used?

Funny, I just bleed/flushed my D2 with that Valvoline synth (not DOT 5) as I replaced the lines at each corner. After 3 complete bleed cycles, I can't believe how good my pedal is. My sequence was LR, RR, RF, LF.

Call the dealer the SLABS/ECU recall update.

I wouldn't exactly call the Slabs recall secret, call your dealer. All they do is change out the Slabs ECU with a new unit. My brakes have been that way since I got my D2, and I've had the Slabs ECU replaced. I bleed mine per the serivce manual and the pedal got a little better, not much...

As my previous post stated, after the second bleed, I am not having any problems. I took it all over on Sunday and the brakes deffinately just needed blead. And I did follow the sequence in the workshop manual. RF, LF, RR, LR. Troy
