Yeah. I'm in there now. Gotta find the right words.... ;) Sleep time soon. Gotta get up early for coyote hunting in the morning, and then the weekly Sunday afternoonsnow wheeling romp. Everyone wants me to bring the Rover. No one else has one and there's about 30 trucks in the crew. Not sure. It's still stock with shitty tires. Maybe with the rear chains on. Need some diff guards because it's too freakin low. Nope. It's gotta be da Ford. Maybe in a month or two. |

Okay. The newbie is asking too many questions and pissing off the regulars. Sorry for all the hassle. I have about 20 friggin windows open and I am doing the research. I just thought I'd save some time. It's always a drag when someone comes into a new board and asks the same lame questions. I guess the difference is that most of these people never actually DO anything. They just talk about what they're gonna get. I actually am trying to get my truck built right now and want to get some of the more important things done quickly. I'd like to order my bumper, winch, sliders, diff gaurds, rack and tent on Monday if I can get them narrowed down. Think of the busiest guy you know. I'm twice as busy as he is. That's why the questions and the hurry. I don't get many chances to check or take action on these things. Scuse me for stepping on toes. |

Hey Sheldon - no worries, glad you're here and you'll have a lot of fun with your DII. I think you're right to wait a little bit before you go out with a bunch of other folks - especially since it sounds like the may encourage you to push the envelope a bit. Get comfortable with the Disco then go blow 'em away! For the DII that low front airdam is a liability. You'll either tear it off on the trail (eventually) or lose it when you put on that aftermarket bumper. If you put on an aftermarket bumper it will really weight the front end down, so you'll be changing springs (pretty quick and easy) and that will get you some lift. Yes, you'll have to watch the front diff until you get a guard on it, and the street tires will make the trails more challenging. That said, you'll be really surprised by how well a stock configure DII will do, especially once you learn how to finesse the electronic traction control. Just remember that this is not a 'brute force' vehicle where you try to clear an obstacle by approaching it at maximum speed! That's an impressive list you are working on. Don't forget springs and CDL.

Sheldon, with the 2000, hook up the CDL pronto! Hope you have 16 inch rims on that thing! |

OK, air bags. The sensor controlling deployment of the airbags are somewhere in the dash, so there are no connections to loose. What may be affected is the timing of deployment, and the anount of force needed. The stock bumper setup and so called Airbag compatible bumpers have crumple zones and/or crush cans, while non airbag bumpers don't. This means that with a non airbag bumpers, since nothing is crushed, more energy is transferred thorugh the rest of the truck, so it actually takes less of a hit to set the airbags off than it would with an airbag compatible bumper. The airbags might also deploy a fraction of a second earlier in a crash. This is the theory. In real life, I have bumped into things with my KVT on the trail numerous times without setting the airbags off. I also know of at least one D1 with a Safari Gard that was in a car crash, and the bags deployed normally. So to sum it up, you won't loose your airbags by adding an aftermarket bumper, but proceed at your own risk. - Axel

Take off the Fuse for the airbag before offroading. In any case, the WINCH should be WELL secured to teh chassis, otherwise, not a good rigging method. |

You can pull the fuse if it makes you feel better, but I usually don't. Still haven't set off the airbag, either. But each his own. Winch well secured, that is stating the obvious, but still is a point that can't be stressed enough. If anyone is adding a winch, it must be installed either on a winch bumper, which in turn is securely mounted to the frame, or on a winch tray mounted securely between the frame rails. You can't mount a winch to a stock bumper, as it isn't strong enough. - Axel

Cool. I was worried about them deploying too easily, and would prefer not to lose the airbags completely as I will sometimes travel with my kids in this truck. I was thinking about some kind of switch - say "off" for offroading and "on" for on road travel. Fuse works for me. Pugs. I was impressed with the disco today, as were several people out in the snow. I high cnetered a few times, but so did everyone else. I had shitty street tires on there (255/65-16) and they still did okay. I did need to use low gear in manual mode 2nd a couple of times to get enough power to spin the wheels and get up some snow covered steep hills, but it made it. Occassionally I had to back down and take a run at it hard and fast - sometimes more than once. It was hard not to pin it. I did this several times through the day and I bounced all over the damn place climbing hills at flat out and thought I might blow a tire on rocks ond frozen shit I was slammin' them so hard. Later, I tried climbing steady and it worked pretty good provided the trail was relatively clear. If the snow was more than about a 8" deep or fresh powder I had to pin it hard again. All in all it was fun and impressed me. I did have a situation where my manual and Sport modes on the dash, combined with the light on the shift indicator and the D on the dash LCD were all flashing steady. I never did figure out why and had to turn off the motor and restart the truck to clear them. Strange. Had me pretty nervous as I was bringing up the rear. |
