Just finished reading a bit about this engine that was fitted to land Rovers over in Oz. Wonder if this would also fit the disco ? any thoughts

Yep _ i guess I should of qualified this a bit more - apparently it was standard fitment in some of the land rovers in Australia. So I am wondering if this is the case is there an available bell housing etc.

yep it is possible to fit pretty much any engine with enough $'s. The benefit to this one would be that it was a standard option and it is relatively cheap - not to mention more torque than the 4.0

Jeff,

I know that they were fitted to a few 110 County's in Oz. The County was the immediate predecessor to the Defender, with coil springs all round but drum brakes on the rear.

The naturally aspirated (not turbo) motor has the reputation for longevity and unbreakable stump pulling torque low down but runs out of breath on the open road.

I was filling my Tdi up at the diesel pump last year and heard the uncharacteristic rattle of a Range Rover pull up behind me. (This bloke had done the prepurchase inspection on my Disco in 97 when his RR was still a V8)

I thought it was an early RR italian turbo diesel. It turned out that he had transplanted the 3.9 Isuzu into his RR. No reason why it wouldn't fit into the Disco with some work.

But I wouldn't bother unless you intend to do a lot of low speed towing (ploughs and other agricultural equipment).

Dunno if this link will work:

http://www.discoveryauto.com.au/engine%20replacement/engine%20replacements.htm

Otherwise just navigate through from the parent website. Anyway, they offer turbo versions of the Isuzu diesel. Maybe send them an e-mail and ask for more info re swapping out a V8. I do remember hearing some bad reports from army guys about the non-turbo Isuzu. Dunno about the turbo version. I live near the SAS barracks and see their 6x6 Perenties quite often. Nice looking trucks ;)

Awesome - thanks Toby - the reson I asked is becasue there is one up on Ebay at the moment - thought it may be another option to the 200/300 TDI's as well as the 2.8 turbo. I think the full engine was listed at somewhere around $1600

Isuzu has a 2.8 turbo diesel for which there is a kit (adapter plate for bellhousing, motor mounts) to install it into Rover ( to mate up to a LT77).....

FWIW....

Thanks for all the input eveyone - I was really impressed by one of the posts on lrenthusiastforum.com that read

"it is an indirect injection engine, but known and loved for its ruggedness, reliability and bottom end torque.

Lots of ex County owners prefer it to the 300Tdi, which lacks the bottom end oomph the Isuzu has in spades.
If you instal the turbo as used in the Army 6x6's, you end up with the best of both worlds."

It appears that this could be a pretty cost effective option.

Jeff the 3.9 County's pull strong thats for sure, and last for ever. I think they were converted here in OZ by a company called "Perenty" for JRA (Jaguar Rover Australia). They also built all the special stuff for the Australian army. They are breathless on the highway with out a turbo. I also think they may have had what is know as a "Santana" 5 speed box and not an LT77 but I'm not sure.

Yeah I think I remember reading somewhere the Aussie Defenders with Isuzu 3.9s had the LT85 (the "Santana" box made in Spain). The LT85 is supposedly the strongest LR box.
