There is a 96 5-speed on ebay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2455218363 that is in my area. I e-mailed the owner inquiring about the Hill Descent System that is listed in the ad. For the life of me (and I am no expert in any way) I have never heard of this before on this particular unit.

Here is the response I got from the owner: "Also, the hill descent sysytem is
indeed on the DI series. It isn't a button that you push seperately. With a five speed you put the car in first while in 4 wheel low and take
your feet off of both the brakes and clutch. The car will then navigate the hill at the speed
it deems safe. "

Is this accurate?

That's what I thought but I needed clarification. The ad also states that it has diff locks wich I am sure he is talking about the CDL.

Sounds to me like his brake fluid is low...and when his truck is going down a hill his "brake" light goes on! LOL. He probably needs pads too.....

Sounds like engine braking to me. If thats the case I have that feature (HDC) on my Honda as well.

Crap, it is just that the 5 speed, unlike an auto has no slip. If you stick it 1st gear low range it will engine brake on compresion down the side of a building and that's the V8, the Tdi's are even better. You don't need descent control on 5 speed.

This is great, now I've found another tag line to throw on my 5-speed! All along I thought it was just engine braking, and now I come to find out it was the factory optional HDC feature only found in manual transmissions!

I have found it was also included in our 1.8T jetta, although its used more to rapidly decrease speeds to take turns...not so much on trails.

Part of the reason the handbrake is on the xfer case is to allow you to put drag on the whole drivetrain (all 4 wheels when locked) eg down hill. Has been a LR trademark for years.
