My wife could not start her 96 Disco this very cold -32C morning. The battery drained down and then it wouldn't even crank. To compound matters, after she tried she came back in to get my help and then the ignition lock was stuck and the key would not turn (the steering wheel was locked also)....no amount of playing got either loose. And then the hood release was stuck too. No happiness here. She took my car and then I went back to try to solve the problems. She also told me that the acclerator pedal was loose.
I finally was able to free up the ignition lock with some WD-40 and a hair dryer. Hair dryer also got the hood latch unstuck. I put on a charger on the battery and then came back to try a few hours later and it started but with a big problem. The throttle was wide open and the rpms were up to 6,000. I sort of forgot about the loose acclerator pedal. I shut it off after a few seconds and then waited and tried again and same horrid max revs. I quickly shut down as I'm sure max revs on a cold engine can not be good. I checked the throttle linkage from the accelerator pedal and found it was indeed stuck wide open and not releasing. So more WD-40 and it is moving okay. After all that long-winded explanation, my question is: Did I potentially do some serious damage with the WOT on start up? There is synthetic Mobil 1 in there so I am hoping that helped with lubrication on the cold engine parts. I drove it after and it seemed okay, no weird noises or grating sounds. Not too smart to forget about the loose accelerator pedal. It was running in total at WOT for about 5 seconds. Any advice on whether I f#c#ed something up? And what should I be looking, listening, smelling for?

Doubt you damaged anything - maybe a bit of accelerated rod/main bearing wear, but for a few seconds - don't sweat it. Nothing you could do at this point anyway -what's done is done. I'd be more concerned with lubing/replacing cables and IGN switch so it doens't re-occur (with someone other than yourself driving possibly)
