I was on the trail all day yesterday. Before I got on the highway, I did my normal spraying down of all truck parts. When doing the underbelly, I saw the tip of a branch under it. This is pretty normal after rides, so I crawled under my truck to pull it out. I felt like I was at the circus because I kept pulling on it out and out and out. The branch was apprx 6 feet long, and 1-2" in diameter. I couldn't see any damage from it, and everything else was ok. All was running fine on my 2 hour interstate drive home last night. Everything still seems to be ok under there, but just to make sure - is there anything I should attempt to check closer? I took a pic and marked the area where the branch went in and continued back to the tail of my truck. You can see the mark on the crossbar it made as it went in. That is where it was sticking out I noticed it.
My second question: There is a wire hanging down on the rear drivers side. It looks pretty low to me and like it could catch on something. I don't know if it has always been this way and I have never noticed it? I took 2 pics and used arrows to mark the location of the wire.
Thanks in advance for your help, Jamie |

That's not a wire, it's the rear diff breather tube. Get yourself some wire ties and re-route that thing up and outta the way. Or better yet, get some tubing (1/4"ID??) and extend that thing up to the engine bay, junction it with the tcase/AT/front diff breathers and run it up your snorkel. Also, get rid of that stock muffler and get a flowmaster 50 SUV and cut that rear resonator off if you haven't already. |

Screw the flowmaster 50 suculux 5000. You already have a stainless steel muffler that will out last your rig and the 2.1 horsepower you gain from the new muffler ain't squat. Cut off the resonater because it will get rip off on the trail one day. I want to see a 2" 6' stick that got jammed up in there too. |

Don't let Garret Porterfield see that your tires are white letter in. He will be all over you. He got a thing about that....kind of a faux pas if you will. |

Was the stick pine, cedar, or some other kind of wood? This is important to know, in order to facilitate further analysis. You may also want to post this question in the Land Rover section of the Pirate bbs at http://www.pirate4x4.com/ They have more experience in these kind of matters. - Axel

Thanks Guys, I don't know what kind of stick it was, but I did show it to the last two guys that were still on the trail. One of the guys was from LR Orlando and he said that's what skid plates are for. I really wish I had looked backwards before pulling it out, but I didn't think it was a big long stick. The end that was sticking out was sheered, so I know it was a fresh cut. I'd like to know what was holding the stick in there and what route it took when I impaled it. It couldnt have been dragging under it, b/c when I came out of the woods my dogs headed under my truck to get cool while I broke down my recovery equipment. No pics. I thought about it though. What I really wanted to do was to bring it home to show my techs and then keep it as a souvenier. It was too gross, wet, and dirty to put inside my truck. I was too tired to tie it down on my roofrack and had a long drive ahead of me. We were off roading in a forest accessable by a grass landing strip. I bet the stick is still up there. I left it out of the way of the landing strip near a barn/workshed where the water spigot was. I'm tempted to drive back and see if it is there. I just hope I didn't break something. Should the white letters be on the outside of my tires? When I had them installed, I had no idea if they should be in or out. Let me know if they should be out please - b/c now I have a place that WILL work on big tires. I can get them flipped if they are on backwards. Brian, thanks for compliment. I spray the heck out of my truck and engine when I come off the trail. I go at all wheels (brakes) from the inside and outside. The last 2 rides I was tired and tempted to skip it, but I told myself mud = sandpaper, and went to work. I really want a pressure washer big time It's cool that I have done this so many times that I know all of the odd nooks and crannies that the mud and debris tries to hide in. I'll be back in a few minutes, I'm gonna go get a pic to upload of my clean up work today. We've got a cold front approaching and it is damp - things weren't drying quickly as they usually do. After 4 hours, they were as wet as when I washed them. I got creative to try to get everything to dry out. Just hung stuff up and didn't really pay attention to it. Went off to work on something else and when I returned to my clean up job, it looked so stupid that I cracked up laughing. I just had to go get my camera. I'll be back with pic, at the very least you can end your day getting a good laugh |

I thought my clean up job was hilarious Everything is all stored back where it belongs. Ropes still didn't dry even when I got them up off the ground. I respooled my winch line damp and my recovery rope is hanging on a ladder in the garage. Everything else dried off enough to store it back in it's place. Jamil, per your request - me and my best freind on the trail:

Jamie, White Letters in or out is your decision. There are those at http://www.pirate4x4.com/ that swear by white letters out. In fact many many heated debates have taken place over there with the argument being about better traction through proper directional rotation of the tires. There are two gentlemen on that BBS in particular that are tire gurus. One of them, Dee Cantrell even has Bead Lockers. I just wanted to warn you about Garrett. Certain things on a Rover really get him spooled up.

They may be on to something there. But the correct directional rotation can also be regained by switching the driver side tires over to the passenger side, and vice versa. Allthough, if you have Bead Lockers, a limited slip or a Detroit, it don't matter much. As far as the stuck branch goes, you should take a wood sample next time. One that shows a cross section of the wood, would be best. By the way, did you notice if the wood was partially petrified or not, when you pulled it out? This is important to note, too. - Axel

I had the XD set white letters out. I noticed a considerable decrease in mpg so I turned them to letters in. I gained about 2 mpg. I heard it was because of paint friction. I am afraid now about getting a stick on my frame. Maybe I need to do a 4" lift. We have a lot of pine needles where I wheel. I am concerned that I may wear some paint on the underside too. Could pine needles damage my cats? B.K. |

I was too dumbfounded at the wood to notice much of anything except for how big it was. I'm going to try to track it down, the guy that designed the trails and made the challenging bridge for the event was standing there when I pulled it out. He was still there when I left. If I can find him, maybe he knows someone who lives close to where we were and can pick it up for me and hold onto it until I can drive over there. I'm really annoyed with myself for not bringing it home, or at least taking pics of it. I had just finished downloading all my pics and didn't want to get my camera back out. Next time I'll know better, it's really bothering me wondering how it was wedged up under there and wondering if it damaged anything. I scooched all the way under my truck yesterday on the grass and couldn't see any damage - but I don't know that I would be able to know on visual. I'll let you know if I can track it down. Do you think the breather tube was always that way and I just didn't notice it - or did I pull it down on the trail? The best thing about having lettering in is that my wheels and tires are usually filthy - letters in hides the dirt better. At least a good run on the trails got all the remaining armorall or whatever the car wash put on my truck off of it. As soon as all my bruises heal from sliding off my sliders and bumpers, I'll be as good as new too Besides the trails, we had a blast driving on the grass landing strip/runway, it was way too much fun going fast - it felt smoother than any highway. It was so very very soft - it felt really really neat. I'm going to have to check out whatever this 4x4 pirates group is. One of the guys found a pit listed by them that is east of Tampa - they want to try it next weekend. As always, thanks for your help, Jamie |

jamie the least of your worries is the stick. focus on the tire lettering. "be the ball Danny!" white letters out has some varying schools of thought. some people feel it is the 'white trash' and/or social misfits of the rover community and some people argue that white letters out only accent the natural beauty of the tire. i like how the tire looks when it is spinning with the pretty white letters. makes me smile. and ya know........that's all that really counts damit. ps: did axel really just say that tires are "bi"? whoa. coopers only go one way and that's white letters out!! |

I once heard of someones rig being contaminated by a wood or tree branch of some sort. Apparently the specific wood had a chemical reaction with the oils and lubricants in the vehicle. Something about major engine failure......... Funny thing was..... they were on a boyscout's Snipe hunt? go figure....... I've got to stop typing now..... I'm off to the tire shop. I just realized my tires are on backwards, but instead of reversing the tire and putting the white out I am going to have them mounted inside-out. I have heard the traction is better and more puncture resistence. They have a lot more info on this over at the Pirates board for those interested.

If I have uni-directional tires, will I ruin them if I drive in reverse too much? My tire shop guy also told me that we shouldn't refer to conventional tires as "street tires" anymore. That is insensitive to inner city youths. The preferred term in now "metro-directional", so I think Leslie was misinformed about XZL's being metro-directional. Those are strictly bi-directional open-minded-terraine tires. |

Craig/Koby, I'm just bloomin 'gonna' keel over if you can get a satellite close up of my tree branch when the cloud cover clears. Thanks for the words of caution. I am very very careful when I spray down my engine. Really, I'm careful with my entire truck when I spray it down. This was the first event that I have ever attended where they had someone there to spray down the rovers afterwards, but I still did it myself. I don't feel comfy having anyone else do my post trail work. I'm still horrified about the stick but at least I can be thankful that I am practically paranoid about getting on the highway without performing a thorough post trail ride check of everything. I thought that thing was just a tiny sliver of a stick when I first saw it. It didn't look any different from the other side of my truck when I went over to try to reach it from that side. I guess it's a good thing that I couldn't reach it and climbed under to get it. Can you believe it - I installed that goofy clearance wind up hose on my roof rack from Boaters World on Saturday to make life easier when I come off the trail, and then it turns out that they had a pressure washer there. I'm still leaving my roll up low profile hose up there though. Except for now - I really want a pressure washer really bad for when I am at home - using a pressure washer was just way too cool. The one they had was adjustable too. In the meantime, I've sent out emails and made a few calls to try to locate my stick. I guess it's a good thing that looking like a dumb bunny doesn't bother me Oh well... |

Now Jaime, I know you don't know me and have probably never read any of my posts as I've been lurking for a while but not contributing. But heed what I say here: I noticed you said that the stick was fresh cut. What worries me, and I've seen this happen before, is if the stick left saplings behind. Sure, small saplings won't do much damage. But in the humid environment in which you live, I fear that they may grow and entangle themselves in some of the underworkings of your Rover. I've even heard of them making there way into the braking system, causing havoc when brake fluid is impeded by a cedar, oak, or--God forbid--birch. |

Good point, and this is another reason why it is important to determine what kind of stick it was. Not only can saplings left behind cause havoc as described above, they can also cause problems when driving into any state with strict agricultural controls, such as California. Unauthorized interstate transport of agricultural or other biological substances may even fall under The Patriot Act. - Axel

I have just a sec to upload this & I can check back later tonight to read todays posts. My truck is still driving fine today. I took a good look under it truck again and unless I'm missing something (which is possible), it still all looks fine. (with the exception of the wire/breather hose too low). I've been thinking about that stick all afternoon and I'm willing to take a good guesstimate that I did not do any damage and this is why: I'm a bloomin' airhead sometimes and lose things and spill things, and break dumb stuff, but I just can not even imagine missing a change in permformance or operation - I'm just SURE I would NOT have missed something that big being wedged under my truck. That being said, I have been mentally reviewing the ride yesterday and I had only one unusual thing happen. I had backed up quite a distance through mud ruts and stopped to get out. When I got back in and put truck into drive, there was a "clunk", nothing loud but I definitely felt it. I had barely begun to roll, so I stopped movement, put it into reverse without incident, then put it back into forward drive without any "clunk", so I continued forward without any trouble. I'm willing to make a high percentage "guesstimate" that is when I picked up the branch stick and took it for a ride. That is the ONLY unusual thing I experienced yesterday on the trail. I sure hope I'm right because if I am, I would not have hit it hard enough for it to do damage. Real world experience for taking stuff as slow as possible on the trail??? I just rechecked all the fluids and all is fine except for a bottle on the front drivers side with a blue lid that has a low level. I think it is the windsheild wiper fluid by the picture on the top of it. I don't know what to fill it back up with, but I will look in my book. Thanks again for your help, Jamie p.s. I haven't heard anything back on my stick inquiries, but I haven't checked my email this afternoon. Now I'm just definitely going to have to locate it - even if it's just for the value of being a souvenier. |

I ran over a steel fence post laying on it's side in the sand in my jeep once - only damage was a constricted fuel line after the post got tangled up there. I also ran over a plastic lawn chair in my disco just for the shear amusement. It was sitting in the middle of a river I happened to be driving in at the time. But still, a pic of that stick would be helpful... |

Windshield wiper fluid goes in your windshield wiper fluid tank! Water is another option but I would stay away from that cheap garden hose stuff. For best windshield washing results we use "Evian". |

Yes that bluish liquid is limited supply of stuff that can get you high as kite, i.e windshield wash. (Always strikes me as paradox - its illegal to consume alcoholic beverages/smoke pot while you behind wheel, but its ok to sniff that horrible stuff as you trying to wash those bugs off) |

In all seriousness Jamie, I've found that purified water is best for the windshield. Standard tap water often has too many minerals. The cheapest source of purified water is indeed something like Evian. If you live in a cold climate, you of course have to worry about freezing, so some of that synthetic windshield washer fluid may be right for you. |

During AG season in the Central Valley of CA the bugs get bad enough that plain water just smears them around to the point you can't see. The bottled wiper fluid seems to cut bug guts better. If you're just spraying dust or mud off then water works great and is cheaper. |

Jaime, Pay close attention, this is very important. When you find that stick (and I know you will) take it to a forensics lab. Have them analize the stick for fingerprints or any other evidence. Somebody could be secretly trying to sabotage your Oh-so-nice disco. A jealous Dwebber perhaps? They just might be following your every move here on Dweb, reading about the time and location of your next trail ride. Placing dangerous sticks in the path of your rig. Re-wetting your straps when they are trying to dry while you're at work? Constantly be on the look out for suspicious movement in the bushes when your on the trail, ie-shadow movement, bushes moving when there is no wind, etc... Things are not the way they use to be... I think this thread should be closed for fear that someone on this board could actually be involved with the Sierra Club, or even worse Heartwood. We cannot afford to have anyone read that Jamie actually drove over a stick. I am very concerned for our future. Ho: I am incredibly offended by this: "no no no no... you call wong numbah. i no find stick hea. hea no houston." Making fun of Asian people is very tactless. Jamie, I too have the hose-tank set up on my XD. We have hard water in Clay City, so hard that I had to put a softener in the house because I chipped my tooth while taking a drink, and not to mention the bruses I kept getting from taking a shower. When I would wash my disco, the hard water would dent it. Thank goodness there is plenty of aluminum siding on my disco, goes back in place easily. What I am getting at (took awhile, I know) is that I installed a Pure in-line water conditioner in the engine compartment of the XD. The 10 gallon tank is located near the fuel cell, behind the frame. The line from teh tank runs to the purifier, then up through the A-Pillar to the roof rack where my self recoiling hose is. My tank is pressurized by an ARB compressor. It works great when I need to wash the tall grass that gets caught up in wheels when I am wheeling in a field. Wow do I get excited, you never know when you are going to hit a rut. Anyway, I can shoot photos of my system if you want to see it. All: I went ahead and ordered new tires, even though I bought a new set last month. I felt it was only the right thing to do as a proud resident of Indiana. I ordered a set of Hoosier 33's with super bright white lettering. I am having a custom set made that has "boy" after the word Hoosier. My spare will have "momma" in place of the "boy". I know that my mpg will drop again but I am too proud to worry about the expenditure. The attention I will gain with my new white letter tires will be worth it. Your humble servant, Brendan |

You guys are just too bloomin' funny I don't think anyone is going to come after me for catching a stick - it's not like I was out there trolling for branches. I've gotten some pretty stern and logical "tread lightly" lectures. I do my best to put that into practice when I'm on the trail. I like being out there way too much to put any of our trails at risk of being closed. Besides that, I'm extremely fortunate to continue to receive the good instruction and examples set by all of the responsible DiscoWeb members about treading lightly |

Ya'll ain't right. Axel, I'm concerned that the passing cold front and the resulting change in barometric pressure would probably skew the lab results from any analysis if the stick, so it may be pointless now. Jamie, you should always impound such evidence and freeze it as quickly as possible to preserve any data that can be extracted. BTW, if you drive back up to find the stick and make it back home, chances are your Disco is OK. I have two questions though; what is a "post trail inspection" and; I didn't know you had to wash a Land Rover? |

Jamie said: "I'm just SURE I would NOT have missed something that big being wedged under my truck." Jamie, this could be serious. Is there anything in the archives about procedures for when your truck has a wedgie? As for why women on this board sometimes ignore the men, just look at Craig's recent posts of those maps. I can't figure out if you guys are serious or not though that I need to see the stick and it's composition Maybe some of you remember back when after I got my winch someone local told me that I needed to tie my truck to a tree overnight to stretch out the winch cable?? Jamie, no, they are quite serious. If you take courses towards a career in Arboriculture or Tropical Biology or other such courses relating to Wood & Paper type science majors, you will learn about the different kind of oils and secretions various woods have (depending on the type naturally). The America's have a high concentration of various trees/shrubs that contain higher than normal acidic oils usually more found near more populated areas due to the pollution content of the area. As one may remember from high school (or grade school) science classes, plants help filter out the nasty things in our air, and produce oxygen, basic Photosynthesis where molecules of water and molecules of carbon dioxide produce sugar plus and oxygen (for you chem nerds: 6H2O + 6CO2 --> C6H12O6+ 6O2). Anyway, when pollution is introduced, the chemical by products from some plants/trees/shrubs can show up in the forum of acidic oils that in some cases have been shown to have enough concentration to start eating metals. |

What Chris says is very true. Some species of wood like for example oak, pine and cottonwood also naturally contains a chemical that exacerbates this process. If your stick was any of these woodtypes, and was in substantial contact with your chassis, you may see some reddish discoloration start to form 6-9 days after initial contact. This is a sign of serious contamination, and must be properly cleaned immediately. - Axel

{Maybe some of you remember back when after I got my winch someone local told me that I needed to tie my truck to a tree overnight to stretch out the winch cable??} Overnight is obviously overkill, but a new steel cable does need to be respooled under load prior to being used. This is indeed to tighten up the cable. This is only necesary for a steel cable, though. You don't have to do it with a synthetic rope. - Axel

Let's just hope and pray it wasn't a section of poison ivy. You could be in really big trouble then. That stuff never looses it's potency. If you still have some of it jammed up against the exhaust pipe or muffler, it can, when heated, give off a vapor that is toxic, especially if breathed into one's lungs. Be careful; also wash your hands thoroughly after handling that stuff. And never burn poison ivy in a fire. Danger, Will Robinson. |

LOL, well, Onionman speaks the truth. The poison ivy wisdom is correct. It's prudent to watch what one burns. When I was a kid I recall a troop of Boy Scouts that performed a "public service" and uprooted a grove of pot plants. They burned it all in a HUGE bonfire and suddenly there was a run on mess tent Fritos. They'd have cleaned out the Doritos but Doritos hadn't been invented yet. Karen |

.. Yesterday I was at a gas station in Fenelon Falls, Canada and some kids pulled up in a Jeep, they were commenting on the disco when one of them asked " Hey did that guy find that stick?". "What are you talking about?" I replied.. All their faces seemed shocked and one kid said " What!?! You haven't heard about the guy with the disco who got a 6 foot wooden stick rammed though his chasis!!!" I said "Holy sh*t kid don't joke around!!" " Its on Disco Web check for yourself" another kid yelled..and apparently he wasn't jokin! This is all too shocking!! Just last weekend I noticed a small hole in my tail light? I looked inside and there it was a small peice of so called "harmless" stick... and that was just a little peice!! I'm no expert on wood but it looked like the type that gives off something bad?? Another question thats a little off topic... Has anyone ever mounted a wood chipped on an arb bumper? oh and ... I can't remember what else floats but doesn't it have to do with witches and a giant midevil scale to weigh the duck and the stick... |
