my check engine light on my 94 range rover lwb recently turned on. there's always more people in the discovery board not working when they should be so i thought i'd ask here. engines are similar or the same too. rover's been pretty well maintained. i just passed the smog test last december.

yesterday the check engine light came on. i noticed nothing else unusual. this morning after driving it for about 5 miles in traffic, i noticed the idle would get real low to where it almost died at stop lights. it actually did die once when i was in reverse to parallel park. so based on these symtoms, what's the likely problem. i already made an appointment at roverland tomorrow morning.

you got it. it was a bad air flow meter. $700 new or $550 rebuilt with same warranty plus $150 install.

Ivan,
The next time that check engine light comes on, take the plastic trim off the bottom of the passenger seat (this also entails removing the black plastic threshold piece). This will reveal a black box with a red two digit number shining through. The number corresponds to fault codes and will help you diagnose the reason for the light without having to take it somewhere. I have a 94 RRC LWB also.

james, thanks for the advice. i started hanging out on this board to start getting educated on rover maintenance. i'm clueless but interested. with a new baby and new biz i currently don't have time to try to fix my rover but i hope to be ready to do so if i ever move to the burbs. our building garage also bans working on our cars.

joseph, i'm sure my pediatrician, lawyer and accountant all grin when they think about what they charge me. if i had those skills i'd do it myself too. if fixing rovers were so easy, $100/hr rates sound like a market inefficiency you can make some dough on.
