I changed the diff fluid in my 2001 Disco this weekend. The front stunk and the rear was a tad milky. My whole damned garage smells like crap because of the oil from the front diff, but that's another story...

Anyway, now that I am done with that, I got to thinking and wondering how difficult it is to change the oil in the transfer case. I've not seen anyone talk about it on here, so I thought I would ask what's involved. Is there a drain plug and fill plug on it like the diffs? What oil? The same synthetic as used in the diffs? What's the frequency schedule I should be changing it on?

I'm assuming it's straight-foreward, I simply haven't done it yet and would appreciate your input.

yeah same fluid as the diff's I use mobil 1. i think the change interval is about every ~30k or so. it helps to refill the t-case if you have a "pump" tell the people at Napa that you need a pump to fll your transfer case they will know what you are talking about. Its just as easy to change the fluid in the case as it is to change the fluid in the diffs

Thanks Phillip. I'm happy to hear it isn't a big deal.

Synthetic GEAR oil like the diffs...Mobil 1 is engine oil, but there is a Mobil synthetic gear oil out there also. Expensive but I'm sure it's good stuff. I use Amsoil synthetic gear lube.

Yea, that's what I used in my diffs. You're right, it is a bit pricey; I paid $8.99 a quart for it at Auto Zone. Each diff took 1.8 quarts... basically $36.00 + tax, + the pump (though I will not have to buy that again in the future).

Thanks again.

Thanks Steve

The dealer uses 90w gear oil for DI for all. front, rear and transfer box. You can use synthetic if you prefer but it is not mandatory.

which weight mobil 1 synth gear oil do you use for the D1 difs? i think they have 2 weights. one is 75w90 and then they make a super expensive "SUV" weight that is like 90w140. the latter of the 2 is $16/quart

75W90 for Disco - that high dollar 140 weight is for late model ford axles (and maybe some others)
