have anyone a clue how long "lifetime" do these units have? R380 manual and LT230 with an 300TDI engine? |

The transfer case is usually okay. The R380 is a bit longer-lived than the LT77, but still shorter than the auto ZF transmission. Take care of one, and they can go on indefinitely. Abuse one, and it can die quickly. US Defenders (3.9 V8) had a problem with 'em earlier on.... weren't staying lubed. Can't say about the Tdi version, tho'.... Good luck, -L

Both essentially good boxes, if the oil is changed regularly. The transferbox has few problems, but the R380 has had problems with lubrication in one of the gears. There's an aftermarket modification gearset, crossdrilled for better lubrication. With that, they're virtually indestructible. The 300 Tdi is also great, provided you keep the timing belt in order. Pre 96 LT77 and 380 boxes have mainshaft oil feed problems which results in back lash and in the worst case complete failure. The fault is that oil doesn't get to the splines in the Transfer case drive gear, the fix is holes drilled in the gear to let the oil in. All boxes fitted to an lt230 that has a serial number that ends in greater than "f" are retrofitted. Many others were done under warenty. The boxes were orinally filled with AFT but this kills them it is best to run them on a lite gear oil, LR now fills them with Gl4 75/80 mtf. R380/lt230 is still what is fitted to 04 disco's and Defenders. Apart from the main shaft problem they are ok. You can check the problem by removing the pto cover. put the 5speed in gear and the transfer box neutal if the drive gear has lash the shaft is toast. The gear slides out in situe and you can look at the wear and see if it has the drilled gear. |
