I took out my '01 SE7 tonight and noticed I was a little cold...then a lot cold. I have no fan, but I can hear a clicking noise under the passenger side footwell. I can not get the fan to activate under any circumstance (manual or auto opperation). Of course, I am 2,200 miles out of warranty. Any help will be greatly appreciated. The dealer has my other truck right now and I told them I didn't need a loaner so I will have no (or cold) transportation until this is fixed.

I should add that the clicking noise is related to the fan activation. When the fan speed control button is touched it will click.

It is pretty easy to get to the fan, I had to open mine up because it got filled with leaves and made a lot of noise. You have to remove the panel under the glove box, and then there are I think three screws holding the fan into the base of a cylinder. Just disconnect the few wires and pull it out. If the fan doesnt run at all, it may have something stuck it it. That is my best suggestion. If the fan works but just does not produce heat, well, when that happened to me it was because my head gaskets were leaking, so check your coolant level.

I lost heat the other week (low coolant) with a 1-year-old in the back. It was really freezing and took 1 hour+ to get to work, which sucked big time for the little one. So now I carry one of those little coleman catalytic propane heaters ($50) with me for emergencies. For now at least, you could get something like this and bungee it to your passenger seat, while you fix it. You won't be in such a crazed hurry.

Another update...if I hit around the passanger footwell on the left side the fan will turn on. This is getting weird.

Probaly the fan resistor pack which is located on the left side of the fan unit as you look at it. I'm having other issues with my 99 D2 fan...only works on MAX or not at all....so I'm either cold or melting and NYC is bloody cold at the moment. My problem may be the elec control unit whcih gives no error codes, but I cannot afford to fix it right now....another out of warranty stupid issue. Rest of the car is superb in this winter stuff though.

Sounds like a short or a loose conection.
Dean, your solution sounds like something that will get you into the Darwin Awards. "Man and child expired in there Land Rover Discovery from carbon monoxide poisoning, both bodies were toasty warm."
Not to be harsh but my uncle died in his motorhome from a CO leak from a poorly vented propane heater that the dealer just installed. IMOHO a propane Coleman heater bungeed to the passanger seat is just stupid.

The Coleman Catalytic heater can be used for indoor use with proper ventilation

*sigh*

The whole point of a cat burner is that there is no CO. Only CO2, which won't kill you.

It is true that the heater needs very, very little ventilation...BUT I DON'T GIVE A SHIT! I am not driving around in a $40,000 truck with a heater resting on the floor. Come on guys I asked for help with how to fix the problem, not on lighting my truck on fire. Dave said it best. Thanks

Correct. You are driving around in a $40,000 truck without ANY heat.

Take it at face value - if you wanna be warm until you fix it, get the heater. If not, freeze! Your choice.

Dean, that is funny. You gave me a great laugh by the way! Dealer traded me the rover they had of mine for this one and they said they will do the repais under warranty...they are great. By the way, I am listing my '03 Range Rover in the classifieds if anyone is interested...56,000 miles, $45,000 firm

Bloody newbie!

Dave, laugh away. Do you run 36-hour day and night runs off-road? Ever broken down off-road in winter? Ever climbed out of an ice hole and into your rover? Ever done ANY wheeling in the winter?

Having an emergency heat source is VERY nice when you need it. Or would you rather cancel the rest of your trip because your ass is freezing off, while all your buddies continue on in sweltering warmth of their functioning vehicles?

Each to his own....

While we are ON the subject: my 96 D1 is having problems heating up these days (cold in NYC these days). On the parkway the temp gauge goes all the way down to C, in traffic it warms up a bit (below 1/4 mark). What might be the problem?

John

PS: I usually carry some extra ruanas with me just in case...

when was the last time you changed your thermostat? Had same problem and changed thermostat and am now toasty warm.
Also if is bloody freezing out, slap a piece of cardboard infront of your rad. Don't cover the whole thing up but maybe start off with half and keep an eye on your temp gauge. Had to so that couple of times when it was -40 C and more.
Take care

Sam, I don't know if the PO ever changed the thermostat. I ordered a new one along with the top and bottom radiator hose.

Thanks for the advise.

My blower in my 95 was having problems. It was determined that the fan speed selector slider thing was bad. From what I understand this is very common. I tried to clean it by using a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and swabbing the electric contacts that the slider rubs against (with the key out of course) It worked for a bit. Seems as if the metal pieces were gunked up nad not allowing the juice to flow.

About the propane heater. I used a Mr Buddy indoor safe unit in my Pinzgauer two winters ago. If you know about Pinzgauers, the heat is terrible. Many pinzi owners are using the Mr Buddy heater and I have never heard of any problems. I don't recommend it though.
